Frederick Lindo
Frederick Lindo (1821-1882) was a Jamaican merchant, publisher and Member of the Legislative Council. Early life Frederick Lindo was born in 1821 at Greenwich Park, Kingston to Abraham Alexander Lindo and Luna Henriques. He was the 7th of 14 children. In 1825, at the age of 4, Frederick moved with his family to Mecklenburgh Square. His next stop at age 7 was the Isle of Wight and from there went to the Channel Islands. When he was 14 he moved to London again before returning to Jamaica in 1841. In 1846, he moved with his father to Cincinnati until his father's death in 1849. Career Frederick's elder brothers: Alexander, Abraham and Henry has set themselves up as merchants trading under the name Lindo Brothers in Saint Mary and Trelawny Parish. Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica, located on the southeastern coast of the island. Abraham Lindo
The Lindo family was a Sephardic Jewish merchant and banking family, which rose to prominence in medieval Spain. Portugal Manuel Lindo was a cosmographer and Chair of the Astronomy department at the University of Coimbra in the 16th century. He published a nautical guide in manuscript form in 1539. He was a dear friend of Amatus Lusitanus, who described him as the eminent astronomer. He worked with Pedro Nunes, Abraham Zacuto, José Vizinho, João Faras to build instruments that made Europe's worldwide expansion possible. Francisco Lindo, was arrested for Judaism and Heresy in Évora, on the 12th of August 1644. Francisco's son Joao Rodrigues Lindo married Contance Nunes of Guarda and lived in Campo Maior. Their son, Isaac (Lourenco), was born in Badajoz in 1638. He became a merchant in Tenerife, where he and his wife arrested by the Inquisition in 1656. Cecil Vernon Lindo
Cecil Vernon Lindo (1870 - 1960) was a Jamaican banker, industrialist, planter and philanthropist. Early life Cecil Lindo was born in 1870, in Falmouth, Jamaica, to Frederick Lindo and Grace Morales, the sixth of ten children. He migrated to Costa Rica from Jamaica at age 18. His older brothers, Howard, Abraham and Robert had arrived in 1885 to work for Minor Cooper Keith, who was building a railroad from Limon to San Jose. He worked as a paymaster from 1889-91 for £2 per week. Career Cecil organised the Lindo brothers in 1891, starting with the purchase of a commissary at Matina from Minor Cooper Keith. The brothers soon expanded, opening a store in Limón and planting bananas. In 1899, they opened a bank in Limon. He was Vice Consul of the United Kingdom in Limón from 1896-1901. Some members of the Barrett family played an important role in the history of Jamaica. Hercie Barrett and family members migrated from England, landing on the island of Jamaica in 1655. Trelawny Parish
Trelawny (Jamaican Patois: ''Trilaani'' or ''Chrilaani'') is a parish in the county of Cornwall in northwest Jamaica. Its capital is Falmouth. It is bordered by the parishes of Saint Ann in the east, Saint James in the west, and Saint Elizabeth and Manchester in the south. Trelawny is known for producing several Olympic sprinters. History In 1770, the wealthy planters in St James and St Ann succeeded in having sections of those parishes become the parish of Trelawny as they were too far from administrative centres. Saint Mary is a parish located in the northeast section of Jamaica. With a population of 114,227 it is one of Jamaica's smallest parishes, located in the county of Middlesex. Its chief town and capital is Port Maria, located on the coast. It is also the birthplace of established dancehall reggae artists, such as Capleton, Lady Saw, Ninjaman, Sizzla, and Tanya Stephens.
