Freddie Gilbert
Freddie Gilbert (born April 8, 1962) is a former American football player who played defensive end for three seasons with the Denver Broncos in the NFL. Born in Griffin, Georgia, Gilbert attended Griffin High School and then went on to play for the Georgia Bulldogs. Gilbert was drafted by the Broncos in the first round of the 1984 Supplemental Draft, but opted to play his first two years professionally with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. Griffin, Georgia
Griffin is a city in and the county seat of Spalding County, Georgia. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 23,478. Griffin was founded in 1840 and named for landowner Col. Lewis Lawrence Griffin. Griffin Technical College was located in Griffin from 1963 and a branch of Southern Crescent Technical College is in Griffin. United States Football League
The United States Football League (USFL) was a professional American football league that played for three seasons, 1983 through 1985. The league played a spring/summer schedule in each of its active seasons. The 1986 season was scheduled to be played in the autumn/winter, directly competing against the long-established National Football League (NFL). However, the USFL ceased operations before that season was scheduled to begin. The ideas behind the USFL were conceived in 1965 by New Orleans businessman David Dixon, who saw a market for a professional football league that would play in the summer, when the National Football League and college football were in their off-season.
