Frederick Lucas
Frederick Lucas (30 March 1812 – 22 October 1855) was a British religious polemicist and founder of The Tablet. His brother Samuel Lucas was a newspaper editor and abolitionist. Biography He was born in Westminster, the second son of Samuel Hayhurst Lucas, a London corn-merchant, who was a member of the Society of Friends. He was educated at a Quaker school in Darlington, and then at University College, London. He studied law at Middle Temple, and was called to the bar in 1835. Lucas converted to Catholicism in 1839. In 1840, Lucas founded The Tablet, published in London, a progressive international Catholic weekly newspaper, just 11 years before the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. It is the second oldest surviving weekly journal in Britain after The Spectator (which was founded in 1828). It has an international readership of over 55,000. Frederick Ross "Buddy" Lucas (22 May 1931 – 18 October 2002) was a New Zealand swimmer and surf lifesaver. Biography Lucas was born in Auckland in 1931, the son of All Black Fred Lucas. He was educated at Mt Albert Grammar School, where he excelled at rugby and swimming. Frederick Warrington Lucas 'Fritz''(January 19, 1903 – March 11, 1987) was an outfielder in Major League Baseball who played briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies during the season. Listed at , 165 lb, Lucas batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Vineland, New Jersey. At age 32, it had been a long journey to the major leagues for Lucas. He started his minor league career in 1923 with the Martinsburg Blue Sox, playing for them one year before joining the Bridgeport Bears (1924-'25), Scranton Miners (1925-'26), York White Roses (1926), Columbus Senators (1926), Charleroi Babes/Governors (1927-'29), Houston Buffaloes (1930) and Rochester Red Wings (1930). He won the Triple Crown of the Middle Atlantic League while playing for the Governors in 1929. Sir Frederick Lucas Cook, 2nd Baronet (21 November 1844 – 21 May 1920) was the second holder of the Cook Baronetcy, the head of the family textile-trading company, and a Conservative Party politician. Life The son of Sir Francis Cook, 1st Bt and Emily Martha Lucas, he was educated at Harrow School, succeeded to his father's titles in 1901 and was married on 7 January 1868 to Mary Anne Elizabeth Cotton, daughter of Richard Payne Cotton. He was succeeded in his titles by his only son Herbert. He was elected at the 1895 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kennington division of Lambeth in South London, and held the seat until his defeat at the 1906 general election. Frederic Augustus Lucas, Sc.D. (March 25, 1852 – February 9, 1929) was a zoologist who served as a curator of the Brooklyn Museum and director of the American Museum of Natural History. He was an expert on the osteology and anatomy of birds. Biography Career Frederic A. Lucas was prominent in the Great American Museum movement, which sought to bring Natural Science to the American public. Frederick Murray Lucas (3 February 1860 – 7 November 1887) was an English cricketer active from 1880 to 1887 who played for Sussex and was club captain in the 1886 season.
