Marseille ( , , ; also spelled in English as Marseilles; oc, Marselha ) is the prefecture of the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône and capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. ''Diary of a Chambermaid'' (french: Le journal d'une femme de chambre, it, Il diario di una cameriera) is a 1964 French–Italian drama film directed by Spanish-born filmmaker Luis Buñuel and starring Jeanne Moreau as a Parisian chambermaid who uses her body and wiles to navigate the perversion, corruption, and violence she encounters at the provincial estate where she goes to work. Though highly satirical and reflective of his typical anti-bourgeois sentiments, it is one of Buñuel's more realistic films, and generally avoids the outlandish surrealist imagery and far-fetched plot twists found in many of his other works. The film was the first screenwriting collaboration between Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière, who extensively reworked the 1900 novel of the same name by Octave Mirbeau. Deville and Perrault won a César Award for Best Writing for their adaptation. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival. Plot and style An unnamed French agency, presumably an intelligence service (though this is never made clear), attempts to coerce a French diplomat into working for them. Their relationship forms the main plot of the film. It is based on Henry Miller's 1934 autobiographical novel ''Tropic of Cancer''. The film stars Rip Torn, James T. Callahan, David Baur, Laurence Lignères, Phil Brown and Dominique Delpierre. The film was released on February 27, 1970, by Paramount Pictures. Strick had previously adapted other controversial works of literature – Jean Genet's ''The Balcony'' and James Joyce's ''Ulysses''. Though the book came out in 1934, the film is set in the late 1960s when Paris, while little changed visually, was a very different place.
