François Souchon
François Souchon (1787 – 5 April 1857) was a French painter. Early years François Souchon was born in Alais, Gard, in 1787. In 1809 he went to Paris to study painting. His father gave him a very small allowance while he was studying. He became a pupil of Jacques-Louis David, the famous painter of historical scenes. Through the influence of M. De Lascour he was able to find work in the houses of several leading personages teaching art to their children. These included Lafayette, Maubourg and Lasteyrie, and Lasteyrie's son-in-law the Antoine Destutt de Tracy. Later he taught in the houses of the Duke of Rovigo, the Prince of San Carlo and Marshall Sébastiani. Charles Auguste Émile Durand, known as Carolus-Duran (Lille 4 July 1837 – 17 February 1917 Paris), was a French painter and art instructor. He is noted for his stylish depictions of members of high society in Third Republic France. Biography He was the son of a hotel owner. His first drawing lessons were with a local sculptor named Augustin-Phidias Cadet de Beaupré (1800–?) at the Académie de Lille; then took up painting with François Souchon, a student of Jacques Louis David. He went to Paris in 1853, where he adopted the name "Carolus-Duran". In 1859, he had his first exhibition at the Salon. That same year, he began attending the Académie Suisse, where he studied until 1861. One of his early influences was the Realism of Gustave Courbet. Auguste-Joseph Herlin
Auguste-Joseph Herlin (18 August 1815 – 13 December 1900) was a French genre painter from Lille. Life Auguste-Joseph Herlin was born in Lille on 18 August 1815. His parents were Joseph Herlin and Julie Desrousseaux, both from Lille. His father was a merchant. After completing his studies at the local college he joined his father's business. He and his brother Théodore jointly managed the business. Between 1840 and 1848 he followed his marked penchant for the arts, and studied painting under François Souchon. He won two medals, including a first class medal in 1843. In 1850 Herlin resigned from business and devoted himself to the arts. With independent means, he was not dependent on his work to make a living and could paint what he wanted. Herlin's paintings belonged to the school of Édouard Muller (painter), Édouard Muller.
