Franklinville is a town in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2020 census. Franklinville is an interior town, located in the northeast quadrant of the county. Franklinville is also the name of a village in the town. History The town was first settled around 1806 by Joseph McCluer and known then as McCluer Settlement. The Town of Hebe was established in 1812 from the town of Olean, at the time the only town in the county, and consisted of the entire northern half of the county. The size of Hebe (later dubbed "Ischua," not to be confused with the current town of the same name to the south) was reduced by the formation of new towns in the county: Perry (the northwest quadrant, 1814), Ellicottville, Freedom and Yorkshire (1820), and Farmersville (1821). The community was named after William Temple Franklin, an agent with the Holland Land Company and the grandson of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. Holland Land Company
The Holland Land Company was an unincorporated syndicate of thirteen Dutch investors from Amsterdam who in 1792 and 1793 purchased the western two-thirds of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, an area that afterward was known as the Holland Purchase. Aliens were forbidden from owning land within New York State (except by special acts of the New York State Legislature), so investors placed their funds in the hands of certain trustees who bought the land in central and western New York State. The syndicate hoped to sell the land rapidly at a great profit. Instead, for many years they were forced to make further investments in their purchase; surveying it, building roads, digging canals, to make it more attractive to settlers. They sold the last of their land interests in 1840, when the syndicate was dissolved. William Temple Franklin
William Temple Franklin Jr, known as Temple Franklin, (February 22, 1760, in London – May 25, 1823, in Paris) was an American diplomat and real estate speculator. He is best known for his involvement with the American diplomatic mission in France during the American Revolutionary War. Beginning at the age of 16, he served as secretary to his grandfather Benjamin Franklin, who negotiated and agreed to the Franco-American Alliance. The younger Franklin was also secretary for the American delegation that negotiated United States independence at the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Farmersville is a town located in the eastern border of Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 1,081 at the 2020 census. History The area was first settled ''circa'' 1805, but no permanent settlement was made until approximately 1817. Farmersville became a town in 1821 from part of the "Town of Ischua" (now Franklinville). The town gained notoriety because of the "Farmersville Garbage Scandal" during the 2000 New York State senatorial race between Rudy Giuliani (who later dropped out in favor of Rick Lazio) and Hillary Clinton.
