Franklin County Courthouse (Tennessee)
The Franklin County Courthouse is a historic building in Winchester, Tennessee, U.S. It is the courthouse of Franklin County, Tennessee. The building was the third courthouse built for Franklin County. The first one was built in 1814 and the second one in 1839. The third and current courthouse was built in 1936–1937. With It was built with funding from the Public Works Administration. The building was designed in the PWA Moderne architectural style by Marr & Holman. Winchester is a city in and the county seat of Franklin County, Tennessee, Franklin County, Tennessee, United States. It is part of the Tullahoma, Tennessee Tullahoma micropolitan area, Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Winchester as of the 2020 census was 9,375. Franklin County is a county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located on the eastern boundary of Middle Tennessee in the southern part of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,052. Its county seat is Winchester. Franklin County is part of the Tullahoma-Manchester, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area. Public Works Administration
The Public Works Administration (PWA), part of the New Deal of 1933, was a large-scale public works construction agency in the United States headed by Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. It was created by the National Industrial Recovery Act in June 1933 in response to the Great Depression. It built large-scale public works such as dams, bridges, hospitals, and schools. Its goals were to spend $3.3 billion (about $10 per person in the U.S.) in the first year, and $6 billion (about $18 dollars per person in the U.S.) in all, to supply employment, stabilize buying power, and help revive the economy. Most of the spending came in two waves in 1933–1935 and again in 1938. PWA Moderne
The Art Deco style, which originated in France just before World War I, had an important impact on architecture and design in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. Marr & Holman
Marr & Holman was an architectural firm in Nashville, Tennessee known for their traditional design. Notable buildings include the Nashville Post Office (now known as the Frist Art Museum) and the Milliken Memorial Community House in Elkton, Kentucky. The firm was formed in 1913 with Joseph Holman (1890–1952) and Thomas Marr (1866–1936) as principals. A number of their works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
