Frank Newton (racing Driver)
Frank Newton (c.1868-1963) was a British racing driver and engineer. Career Frank Newton was a gold prospector during Canada's Klondike Gold Rush era. He worked in the Yukon Territory of Alaska in circa 1895. Later Newton worked as an engineer, circa 1900, he designed and built the Trans-Andean railway which at the time was the world's highest elevation railroad. At the beginning of the 20th century, Newton returned to England to become a motor racing driver back home. Racing career In July 1907, Newton won the Century Stakes at the first meeting ever held at Brooklands, attended by 13,500 people. On 23 September 1908, he won the Monatgu Cup at Brooklands, driving a Napier motor car nicknamed 'The Meteor', after having fought "a terrific duel" with Dario Resta, where their cars "banged wheels at top speed". Peter Newton (winemaker)
Peter Leigh Newton (27 August 1926 – 4 February 2008) was an English-American winemaker, the founder of Sterling Vineyards and Newton Vineyard. Early life Peter Leigh Newton was born in London on 27 August 1926, the son of racing driver Frank Newton (who won the Montagu Cup in 1908 at Brooklands). He and his brother Kenneth were educated at Charterhouse School. He earned a law degree from Balliol College, Oxford in 1949. Newton served in the British Army Rifle Corps during World War II. Career Newton became a journalist with the ''Financial Times'' by chance, after writing a letter to the editor of the newspaper with "his views on the nationalisation of the UK iron and steel industry", and they offered him a job. In 1950, he was posted to San Francisco as their West Coast correspondent. Kenneth Newton
William Kenneth Newton (6 November 1927 – 6 March 2010) was an English doctor who treated British and foreign royalty as well as many celebrities, and after retirement wrote the acclaimed novel '' The Two Pound Tram'' (under the name William Newton) which won the 2005 Society of Authors Sagittarius Prize (for first novelists over the age of 60). Early life He was born in Ealing, west London the son of racing driver Frank Newton (who won the Montagu Cup in 1908 at Brooklands). He and his brother Peter were educated at Charterhouse School, Peter went on to be a pioneer of California's Napa Valley wine industry. Kenneth went on to study medicine at King's College Hospital in London and then at Westminster Hospital Medical School before volunteering to serve as a medical officer in North Africa and Cyprus with the Grenadier Guards. Brooklands
Brooklands was a motor racing circuit and aerodrome built near Weybridge in Surrey, England, United Kingdom. It opened in 1907 and was the world's first purpose-built 'banked' motor racing circuit as well as one of Britain's first airfields, which also became Britain's largest aircraft manufacturing centre by 1918, producing military aircraft such as the Wellington and civil airliners like the Viscount and VC-10. The circuit hosted its last race in August 1939 and today part of it forms the Brooklands Museum, a major aviation and motoring museum, as well as a venue for vintage car, motorcycle and other transport-related events. Dario Resta
Dario Resta (17 August 1882 – 3 September 1924), nicknamed "Dolly", was an Italian Briton race car driver. He was the winner of the 1916 Indianapolis 500. Early years Dario Resta was born in Faenza, Italy but was raised in England from the age of two. He began racing there in 1907 when he took part in the Montagu Cup, the very first race staged at the new Brooklands race track. He set a record of in a half-mile run a few years later.
