Frank Goulden
Frank Donald Goulden (1909–1976) was an international speedway rider from England. Speedway career In 1929 and 1930, Goulden was a leading rider for the Southampton Saints and helped them finish runner-up in the Southern League, during consecutive seasons. When the new National League was created in 1932, he joined the Plymouth Tigers and stayed with them until the end of the 1933 season. In 1934, he joined West Ham Hammers, in exchange for Tiger Hart. In 1932, he was selected for England for he first time, and then made regular appearances at international level until 1938. Southampton Saints
Southampton Saints were a speedway team which operated from 1928 until its closure in 1963. Its track was located at Banister Court Stadium in Southampton, Hampshire. History Southampton was one of the founder members of the 1929 Speedway Southern League, one of the two leagues that came into existence that year. They finished runner-up in the 1929 league and the 1930 Speedway Southern League before joining the National league in 1932. However, halfway through the 1932 National Association Trophy they withdrew and the operation moved to London, with the team becoming the Clapton Saints. The Southampton team returned in 1936 and won the second tier of British speedway, the 1936 Provincial Speedway League. They were National League runners up in 1961 and National League champions in 1962. The club closed in 1963 when the promoter, Charles Knott, sold the stadium to developers. Lea Bridge (speedway)
Lea Bridge also known as Clapton Saints were a British speedway team that existed from 1928 to 1938. They raced at the Lea Bridge Stadium. Brief history They first competed in the Southern League in 1929 and were based at Lea Bridge Stadium, Walthamstow, London When they entered the National League in 1932, they took over the fixtures from Southampton, halfway through the National Association Trophy and taking the name of Clapton Saints. In 1934, the team reverted to the name Lea Bridge but once again were unable to fulfill their fixtures, which were completed by Walthamstow Wolves. The team re-appeared during the 1938 Speedway National League Division Two, under the name of Lea Bridge Cubs, which would be their last season in existence. Plymouth Devils
The Plymouth Gladiators are a speedway team in the British SGB Championship. Under several names Plymouth have competed during various seasons from 1932. The club was reformed after a gap of thirty-six years in 2006 by former St Austell Gulls rider Mike Bowden In 2021 the club successfully applied to join the British second division, the SGB Championship. The team names included Tigers, Panthers, Devils and Bulldogs History 1932–1937 Plymouth's original home was Pennycross Stadium. West Ham Hammers
The West Ham Hammers were a speedway team, first promoted by Jimmy Baxter in 1929. History They operated from the West Ham Stadium until the outbreak of World War II under several different promotions, most successfully under the control of Johnnie Hoskins. The track opened in 1928 and staged a few meetings during the early war years. Meetings were staged in 1945 but the Hammers re-opened in 1946 and ran until 1955. However dwindling crowds saw the promotion close. It did not re-open until 1964. The West Ham team were the inaugural winners of the British League in 1965, under a promotion fronted by former rider Tommy Price. Dave Lanning became promoter in 1966, and West Ham ran for a further six seasons until 1971 when they were informed that the stadium was being sold by the Greyhound Racing Association to make way for building development. Provincial League (1936–1937)
Provincial League (formerly known as Professional League) also known as Pro League was the old regional Football league in Thailand in 1999–2008. It was founded in 1999 under the name "Provincial League" organized by Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The name was changed to "Professional League" in 2004 and then changed back to "Provincial League" in 2007. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. 1937 Provincial Speedway League
The 1937 Provincial Speedway League was the second season of the Provincial League. Seven speedway teams started the season. From the previous season's finishers, Plymouth Panthers had dropped out but Leicester, Birmingham (Hall Green) and Norwich Stars joined up. Leicester withdrew mid-season and their record was expunged. Liverpool Merseysiders also withdrew mid-season but their entry was taken over by Belle Vue. Bristol Bulldogs were the champions and moved up to the National League for the following season. Due to the brevity of the season, teams also competed for the Provincial Trophy in a league format. Leicester had already folded before the competition started and as with the league, Belle Vue replaced Liverpool Merseysiders.
