Frank Carrodus
Frank Carrodus (born 31 May 1949) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger. In his career Carrodus played in the Football League for Manchester City, Aston Villa, Wrexham, Birmingham City and Bury. Manchester City Carrodus had to compete with Francis Lee for a place in the City team for the 1974 League Cup Final. Lee was declared fit and manager, Ron Saunders dropped Carrodus to the subs bench. Aston Villa Saunders and Carrodus both moved to Villa. This time Carrodus was to feature in the first two matches of the 1977 League Cup Final. But he missed out on the victory game having tore knee ligaments in a match against Derby following the first Replay. Carrodus suffered further injuries in the 1978–79 season. Francis Lee (footballer)
Francis Henry Lee (born 29 April 1944) is an English former professional footballer who played as a forward. Lee played for Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Derby County and England. A fast forward, he won League Championship medals with Manchester City and Derby, and scored more than 200 goals in his career. In 2010, he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame. He holds the English record for the greatest number of penalties scored in a season, a feat that earned him the nickname ''Lee 1 (Pen)'' because that was the way his name always seemed to appear on the list of goal scores for City in the match results listings in the Sunday papers. 1978–79 Football League
The 1978–79 season was the 80th completed season of the Football League. Bob Paisley won his third league title at Liverpool as his side fought off competition from Nottingham Forest and West Bromwich Albion. Albion were in their first season under the management of Ron Atkinson, and pulled off a famous 5–3 away win over Manchester United with a team that included Bryan Robson, Brendan Batson, Cyrille Regis and Laurie Cunningham. The three relegation places went to Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham City and Chelsea. QPR had declined since the departure of Dave Sexton in 1977 and were relegated just three years after finishing runners-up in the league. 1977 League Cup Final
The 1977 Football League Cup Final was played between Aston Villa and Everton and required three games to decide the winner, the only time this has happened in the League Cup. The first match took place at Wembley Stadium on 12 March and the game ended in a goalless draw. The replay on 16 March was only marginally better as the teams again played out a draw, this time at Hillsborough the home of Sheffield Wednesday. The game ended 1–1 with both goals scored by Everton players with Bob Latchford's last-minute equaliser nullifying Roger Kenyon's earlier own-goal. The second replay took place at Old Trafford on 13 April. The game is probably best remembered for a 40-yard goal from Villa centre-half Chris Nicholl, and in a 2010 poll this was voted in the Top 25 of all-time League Cup moments. Ron Saunders
Ronald Saunders (6 November 1932 – 7 December 2019) was an English football player and manager. He played for Everton, Tonbridge Angels, Gillingham, Portsmouth, Watford and Charlton Athletic during a 16-year playing career, before moving into management. He managed seven clubs in 20 years, and he was the first manager to have taken charge of Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion, the three rival clubs based in and around the city of Birmingham Saunders also managed Yeovil Town, Oxford United, Norwich City and Manchester City.
