Franjul (family)
The Franjul family is a prominent and respected family in the Dominican Republic with strong political and economic influence in the southwest provinces of the country. The family considers the city of Baní ( Province of Peravia) as the center of its Dominican heritage. In 2020, they welcomed King Juan Carlos I, monarch emeritus of Spain, who stayed in a magnificent complex of the Franjul family. Origins The origins of the family can be traced to the region of Asturias, Spain. Members of the family emigrated to the Dominican Republic in the 19th century, and settled in the small town of Bani, in the Dominican province of Peravia, west of the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo. Dominican historians consistently argue about the Family's origins. Some have recently argued that the phonetics of the surname is one of Arab descent, which implies the family is one of Moorish descent. La Romana, Dominican Republic
La Romana is a municipality and capital of the southeastern province of La Romana, opposite Catalina Island. It is one of the 10 largest cities in the Dominican Republic with a population estimated in 2010 at 130,426 within the city limits ( metropolitan population: 214,109), of whom 127,623 are urban and 2,803 are rural. The name ''Romana'' comes from the word "Bomana", a name given by Indians to what is known today as Romana River. The modern La Romana International Airport was opened in 2000. The city is near several other cities, such as San Pedro de Macorís and the national capital, Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Miguel Franjul Bucarelly is a Dominican author and editor. He is currently the director of the newspaper ''Listín Diario'' and founded the newspaper ''Hoy.'' Franjul has published four books. Early life and career Born in Baní, Dominican Republic, Franjul is the son of Manuel Emilio Franjul Báez, a member of the prominent Franjul family of Asturian lineage, and Antonia Luisa Bucarelly Méndez, a teacher. From the age of 17, Miguel Franjul devoted himself to journalism and in his long career of over 42 years has been director of three dailies and one weekly. He is presently the director of the morning paper Listín Diario, the oldest newspaper in the Dominican Republic, founded in 1889.
