Francisco Abal
Francisco Domingo Abal Guerault (24 June 1951 – 13 October 1972) was a Uruguayan rugby player. He was part of the Old Christians Club and was considered one of the best rugby players in his country. In 1970 he was part of the Uruguayan rugby team. Part of his life and the tragedy experienced during the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 is featured in the film '' Society of the Snow''. Abal is played by Argentine actor Jerónimo Bosia. Biography In Fernando ''Nando'' Parrado's book, '' Miracle in the Andes'', his childhood friend, he is described as a good-looking young man from a family with good social and economic status. The Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was a chartered flight from Montevideo, Uruguay, bound for Santiago, Chile, that crashed in the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972. The accident and subsequent survival became known as the Andes flight disaster () and the Miracle of the Andes (). While crossing the Andes during poor weather, the inexperienced co-pilot Lagurara was at the controls of the Fairchild FH-227D. He mistakenly believed the aircraft had reached Curicó where the flight would turn to descend into Pudahuel Airport. He failed to notice that instrument readings indicated he was still from Curicó. He began descending and the aircraft struck a mountain, shearing off both wings and the tail section. The remaining portion of the fuselage slid down a glacier at an estimated and descended about before crashing into ice and snow. Roberto Jorge Canessa Urta, M.D., (born 17 January 1953) is one of the 16 survivors of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on 13 October 1972, and a Uruguayan political figure. He was portrayed by Josh Hamilton in the 1993 feature film, '' Alive''. 13 October 1972 air crash At the time of the accident, Canessa was a 19-year-old medical student.
