Diplomatic relations between France and Ukraine were established in 1992. Since 2006, Ukraine is an observer in the Francophonie. France is a member of the European Union, which Ukraine applied for in 2022. Both countries are full members of Council of Europe. State visits French President Jacques Chirac made a state visit to Ukraine in September 1998. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko paid a state visit to France on 26 June 2017, when he met with French President Emmanuel Macron. Poroshenko also visited Senlis to meet the Ukrainian community of France and honor memory of Anne of Kiev — Queen of France. The Embassy of France in Kyiv is the diplomatic mission of France in Ukraine. History France recognised the independence of Ukraine on December 27, 1991. Petro Poroshenko
Petro Oleksiyovych Poroshenko ( uk, Петро́ Олексі́йович Пороше́нко, ; born 26 September 1965) is a Ukrainian businessman and politician who served as the fifth president of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019. Poroshenko served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2010, and as the Minister of Trade and Economic Development in 2012. From 2007 until 2012, he headed the Council of Ukraine's National Bank. Ukrainians in France are citizens of Ukraine who have migrated to France. According to INSEE, the Ukrainian population of France was 24,700 in 2017. Refugees from Russian invasion of Ukraine Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian refugees started to arrive in France. By 8 March, it was reported that almost 5,000 refugees had arrived in the country. Anne of Kiev or Anna Yaroslavna, Russian: Анна Ярославна (c. 1030 – 1075) was a Rus' princess who became Queen of France in 1051 upon marrying King Henry I.
