Francesco D'Assisi, Gela
San Francesco d'Assisi is a Roman Catholic church building in the town of Gela, in the province of Caltanissetta, region of Sicily, Italy. History The Baroque church was built in 1659 to replace a prior church built in 1499. It houses prominent altarpieces including a ''Life of St Francis'' attributed to Giuseppe Salerno (Zoppo di Gangi); a ''Martyrdom of St Orsola'' by Francesco Paladini; and a ''Deposition'' (1768) by Vito D'Anna. The marble holy water font (16th-century) was likely sculpted by the studio of the Gagini The Gagini or Gaggini were a family of architects and sculptors, originally from Bissone on Lake Lugano. Gela
Gela (Sicilian and ; grc, ΓÎλα) is a city and (municipality) in the Autonomous Region of Sicily, Italy; in terms of area and population, it is the largest municipality on the southern coast of Sicily. Gela is part of the Province of Caltanissetta and is the only in Italy with a population and area that exceed those of the provincial capital. Province Of Caltanissetta
The province of Caltanissetta ( it, provincia di Caltanissetta; scn, pruvincia di Nissa or ; officially ''Libero consorzio comunale di Caltanissetta'') is a province in the southern part of Sicily, Italy. Following the suppression of the Sicilian provinces, it was replaced in 2015 by the Free municipal consortium of Caltanissetta. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. It reached its peak in the High Baroque (1625–1675), when it was used in churches and palaces in Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Bavaria and Austria. Giuseppe Salerno, more commonly called ''il Zoppo di Gangi'' (Cripple from the town of Gangi) (1588-1630) was an Italian painter active in his native Sicily in a Mannerist style. He may have used the title of ''Zoppo'' because he was a pupil of Gaspare Vazzano or Bazzano (1562 - 1630), who also was known as the ''Zoppo di Gangi''. Vito D'Anna
Vito D'Anna (14 October 1718 – 13 October 1769) was an Italian painter, considered the most prominent painter of Palermitan rococo and one of the most important artists of Sicily. Biography He was the father of Alessandro D'Anna, the brother-in-law of Francesco Sozzi, and the son-in-law of Olivio Sozzi. He studied in Acireale under Pietro Paolo Vasta from 1736 to 1744, when he returned to Palermo. In Acireale, he had painted ''Portrait of the Provost Gambino''. Returning to Palermo, Vito married the daughter of the Catanese painter Olivio Sozzi. Sozzi helped arrange D'Anna to work with the circle of an aged Corrado Giaquinto in Rome. D'Anna frescoed a number of palaces, and the churches of San Sebastiano, San Matteo and del Salvatore in Palermo. Antonello Gagini
Antonello Gagini (1478–1536) was an Italian sculptor of the Renaissance, mainly active in Sicily and Calabria. Antonello belonged to a family of sculptors and artisans, originally from Northern Italy, but active throughout Italy, including Genoa, Florence, and Rome. The family included his father, Domenico (1449–1492), also a sculptor. Antonello had five sons who were sculptors: Antonio (or Antonino; 1510s-1574), Fazio (1520s-1567), Giacomo (1517–1598), Giandomenico (1503-1560s), and Vicenzo (1527–1595). Antonello was born, in 1478, in Palermo, where the Gagini family had settled in 1463. Antonello is said to have aided MichelangeloKruft, Hanno-Walter (1975).
