Francesco Verla
Francesco Verla (1470- circa 1521) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period, active in Northern Italy. Biography He was born in Villaverla and died in Rovereto. He was a follower of Bartolomeo Montagna, and influenced by Mantegna and Perugino. He is described by some, however, as emerging from the ''School of Vicenza''. An ''Enthroned Madonna and Child with Saints Joseph and Francis'' (1520) at the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan, is attributed to Verla. Villaverla is a town in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, Italy. It is west of SP349 and south of A31. Origins From Roman times, the original name of the nearby village that eventually became Villaverla was "Roveredum." The center of that first village was likely located in the area where April 25th Road and Roare Road intersect, suggested by archaeological finds at an old brickyard nearby (Roman coins and traces of arched brick walls of Roman origin.) Around 1004 AD, Giovanni Verla (Giovanni of Werla) and perhaps other of his family members, came from the area of Werlaburgdorf Germany with Holy Roman Emperor Henry II in a military campaign to put down a revolt by Arduin, Marquis of Ivrea. Bartolomeo (or Bartolommeo) Montagna (, , ; 1450?– 11 October 1523) was an Italian Renaissance painter who mainly worked in Vicenza. He also produced works in Venice, Verona, and Padua. He is most famous for his many Madonnas and his works are known for their soft figures and depiction of eccentric marble architecture. He is considered to be heavily influenced by Giovanni Bellini, in whose workshop he might have worked around 1470. Benedetto Montagna, a productive engraver, was his son and pupil and active until about 1540. He was mentioned in Vasari's ''Lives'' as a student of Andrea Mantegna but this is widely contested by art historians. Andrea Mantegna
Andrea Mantegna (, , ; September 13, 1506) was an Italian painter, a student of Roman archeology, and son-in-law of Jacopo Bellini. Like other artists of the time, Mantegna experimented with perspective, e.g. by lowering the horizon in order to create a sense of greater monumentality. His flinty, metallic landscapes and somewhat stony figures give evidence of a fundamentally sculptural approach to painting. He also led a workshop that was the leading producer of prints in Venice before 1500. Pietro Perugino (, ; – 1523), born Pietro Vannucci, was an Italian Renaissance painter of the Umbrian school, who developed some of the qualities that found classic expression in the High Renaissance. Raphael was his most famous pupil. Early years He was born Pietro Vannucci in Città della Pieve, Umbria, the son of Cristoforo Maria Vannucci. His nickname characterizes him as from Perugia, the chief city of Umbria. Scholars continue to dispute the socioeconomic status of the Vannucci family.
