Frances Bodomo
Nuotama Frances Bodomo (born 1988) is a Ghanaian filmmaker, writer and director. Biography and career Born in Ghana, to parents who are both educators, Bodomo is Dagaaba. She was also raised in Norway and Hong Kong, before moving to New York to study film at Columbia University, graduating with a BA in 2010, and NYU's Tisch Film School (MFA). Her first film, ''Boneshaker'' (2013), starring Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival before playing at SXSW, Pan African Film Festival, and Lincoln Center's African Film Festival. Her film ''Afronauts'' (2014), inspired by the Zambian project of Edward Makuka Nkoloso, had its US premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, its international premiere at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival, and was included in the exhibition "Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905–2016" at the Whitney Museum of American Art. ''Art Practical'' is an online arts magazine based in San Francisco producing arts criticism, essays, quarterly issues, and programming related to contemporary art and visual culture in the Bay Area and beyond. History The magazine was established in 2009 by Patricia Maloney, who served as director and editor-in-chief until 2015. In 2013, the publication acquired and incorporated the events website Happenstand and the arts publication ''Daily Serving'', which maintained its independent site with Maloney as director. Black Women Filmmakers
Black women filmmakers have made contributions throughout the history of film. According to Nsenga Burton, writer for ''The Root'', "the film industry remains overwhelmingly white and male. In 2020, 74.6 percent of movie directors of theatrical films were white, showing a small decrease from the previous year. In terms of representation, 25.4 percent of film directors were of ethnic minority in 2020. Of the 25.4 percent of black filmmakers, a small percentage was female. Around 30 percent of film makers are women, and approximately 7 percent of all film makers in the film industry are African-American. Many of the dramas by black women film makers have portrayed subjects such as racism and misogyny. Television programs, and films such as '' I May Destroy You'', ''Daughters of the Dust'', and '' Middle of Nowhere'' are a few examples of audio/visual media that have portrayed issues centered around a community of African-American women.
