Four Home Unions XV
Four Home Unions v Rest of Europe was a rugby union match played in 1990 to raise money for the rebuilding of Romania following the overthrow of Nicolae Ceaușescu in December 1989. The Four Home Unions team's logo was that used by the British & Irish Lions. The Rest of Europe played under the badge of the Romanian Rugby Federation. The match was played at Twickenham, and the Four Home Unions won the match 43–18 with England captain Will Carling scoring two tries. The winners were awarded The Skilball Trophy. British & Irish Lions
The British & Irish Lions is a rugby union team selected from players eligible for the national teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The Lions are a test side and most often select players who have already played for their national team, although they can pick uncapped players who are eligible for any of the four unions. The team currently tours every four years, with these rotating between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in order. The most recent test series, the 2021 series against South Africa, was won 2–1 by South Africa. From 1888 onwards, combined British rugby sides toured the Southern Hemisphere. The first tour was a commercial venture, undertaken without official backing. Paul Ackford
Paul Ackford (born 26 February 1958) is a former English rugby union international who played lock forward. He was formerly an inspector in the Metropolitan Police, and is now a columnist for The Telegraph. Early life Ackford was born in Hanover, West Germany. Education He was educated at Plymouth College, the University of Kent (BA) and Cambridge University (MA), he played lock for England B aged 21 and represented Cambridge in the 1979 Varsity Match, but did not make an impact until joining Harlequins and the Police in 1983. Marcel Toader (4 January 1963 – 3 August 2019) was a Romanian rugby union player and a businessman and media personality. He played as a wing. Damian Cronin (born 17 April 1963 in Wegberg, West Germany) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. Jeff Probyn
Jeff Probyn (born 27 April 1956 in Bethnal Green, London) is an English former Rugby Union player. The Old Albanian, Streatham and Wasps prop was selected in England's squad for the 1987 Rugby World Cup, but Probyn did not make his international debut until 1988, at the age of 31, against France. Inexblicably left out of the 1993 Lions squad that toured New Zealand, Probyn toured South Africa with a World XV in 1989, played for the Lions against France in 1989 and was a member of the Wasps FC side that won the English Courage league in 1990. Steve Bates (born 4 March 1963) is a rugby coach and retired from former rugby union player. He played at scrum-half for London Wasps and was capped once for the England national rugby union team. Craig Minto Chalmers (born 15 October 1968) is a former Scotland international rugby union player and coach. He represented Scotland, the British Lions and the Barbarians at international level.
