Fort Wayne Flames
The Fort Wayne Flames were an indoor soccer club based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that competed in the American Indoor Soccer Association, playing home games at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum from 1986–1989. History The team was founded in by a group of four investors: Bob Britt, Fred Mathews, Jr., James Speed, and William Fahlsing and began play in the 1986–87 season of the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA). The team reached out to experience by hiring away Pete Mahlock from the Louisville Thunder to be the team General Manager. Former Seattle Sounders ( NASL), Cleveland Force ( MISL), & Wichita Wings ( MISL) goalkeeper and University of Washington coach Cliff Brown was brought in to be the first Head Coach of the franchise. The inaugural season was one of struggle for the fledgling team. Indiana Kick
The New York Kick was a professional indoor soccer team based in Albany, New York playing at the Knickerbocker Arena and competed in the National Professional Soccer League (1984–2001). The team was previously known as the Indiana Kick in 1989–90. The Indiana Kick played their games at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Warren Lipka
Warren Lipka is an American retired soccer goalkeeper who formerly coached the University of Kentucky and Morehead State University women's soccer teams. Youth and college Lipka attended Lindbergh High School. After graduation, he attended the University of South Carolina where he played as a goalkeeper on the men's soccer team. He spent his first two seasons as a backup to Glen Thompson. Once he earned the starting spot in 1984, he rewarded his team with a .36 GAA. He followed that in 1985 with a .75 GAA as South Carolina went to the third round of the NCAA tournament where it lost to Davidson. That year he was named the ISAA Goalkeeper of the Year. He finished his career at South Carolina with 13 shutouts, tied with Charles Arndt, for the Gamecocks’ record. Chris Hellenkamp
Chris Hellenkamp is a retired American soccer midfielder who played professionally in the North American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. Hellenkamp attended Seattle Pacific University where he played on the men's soccer team in 1979 and 1980. On December 17, 1980, the Portland Timbers selected Hellenkamp in the first round (ninth overall) of the North American Soccer League draft. He played for the Timbers for two years, including two outdoor and one indoor season. In 1982, he moved to the San Diego Sockers for the 1982–1983 Major Indoor Soccer League season. In the spring of 1983, Hellenkamp had an unsuccessful trial with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. He then signed with the Dallas Americans of the United Soccer League. Chance Fry
Chance Fry (born June 29, 1964, in Bellevue, Washington) is a retired U.S. soccer forward who began his career straight out of high school with the Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League. With the collapse of the NASL, he moved to indoor soccer as well as U.S. minor leagues. Since retiring from playing, Fry has become a college soccer coach. He also earned five caps with the U.S. national team in 1984 and was the 1990 American Professional Soccer League leading goal scorer. Horst Fleps
Horst Fleps (born April 3, 1961) is a German-American retired soccer forward who played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League and United Soccer League. In 1980 Fleps signed with the Chicago Horizons of the Major Indoor Soccer League, playing one season with the team. On July 14, 1982, he moved to the Oklahoma City Slickers of the American Soccer League. He had signed with the Slickers in February, but his West German citizenship prevented him from joining the team because it had its limit of foreign players. He gained his citizenship on July 13, 1982 and joined the Slickers the next day. Both the Slickers and the league collapsed after the 1983 season. On June 14, 1984, Fleps signed with the Rochester Flash of the United Soccer League for the 1984 outdoor season. Paul DiBernardo
Paul DiBernardo is a retired Argentine-American soccer midfielder who coaches youth soccer. He played professionally in the American Indoor Soccer Association and earned one cap with the United States men's national soccer team. Youth DiBernardo, a native of Argentina, emigrated to the United States in 1972 with his family. He grew up in Illinois and attended Riverside High School in North Riverside, Illinois. He graduated in 1981, after which he attended Indiana University. While growing up, he also played for Sparta Soccer Club in Chicago. After high school, played as a midfielder on the Hoosiers soccer team from 1981 to 1984. His older brother Angelo had been a star at Indiana in the late 1970s. During Paul's four seasons with the Hoosiers, they went to the championship game three years running, taking the title in 1982 and 1983 and losing to Clemson in 1984. Steve Boardman (soccer)
Steve Boardman is a retired American soccer defender who played professionally in the Western Soccer Alliance, Major Indoor Soccer League and National Professional Soccer League. Youth Growing up, he played for the La Jolla Nomads soccer club. He graduated from La Jolla High School and attended San Diego State University where he played on the men's soccer team from 1983 to 1986. Professional From 1986 through 1989, Boardman played for the San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer League. He was a 1987 First Team All League defender with the Nomads. In 1987, he signed with the Los Angeles Lazers of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Bill Becher
Bill Becher (born 15 February 1965) is a former American soccer player and head coach. Player Youth Born in West Virginia, Becher grew up in St. Louis. He began his collegiate career at Lewis and Clark Community College. He then transferred to Sangamon State University. In 1986, Becher was a Third Team NAIA All American. In 1987, he scored the winning goal as Sangamon won the NAIA national men's soccer championship and Becher was named the tournament MVP. Ricardo Alonso
Ricardo Alonso was a soccer player who began as a forward before moving to defender later in his career. Alonso spent six seasons in the North American Soccer League, four in Major Indoor Soccer League, at least three in the American Indoor Soccer Association, one in the American Soccer League and two in the American Professional Soccer League. He was born in Argentina. Outdoor NASL Alonso signed with the Minnesota Kicks of the North American Soccer League in 1979 and spent three seasons with the team. He then moved to the Jacksonville Tea Men for the 1982 season. That year, he scored twenty-one goals in thirty games, earning first team All Star recognition. Dave MacKenzie (soccer)
Dave MacKenzie is a retired Scottish-Canadian soccer defender who played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League. Professional MacKenzie attended Colgate University where he played both hockey and soccer. He was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1978, he began his professional career with the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League. In 1980, he moved to the Hartford Hellions for one season before rejoining the Spirit in 1981. He remained with the Spirit until 1985 when he signed with the Baltimore Blast. In 1988, he was hired to coach the Fort Wayne Flames of the American Indoor Soccer Association. Tom Alioto (born May 20, 1958 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a retired American soccer defender who played in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and American Indoor Soccer Association. Player Both Tom Alioto and his twin brother Tim both played extensively as youth players with the Milwaukee Bavarians. Alioto also played soccer for Madison University High School.
