Fort De La Encarnación
Fort de la Encarnación on the Repocura River was built in 1666 by a team overseen by Juan Ignacio de la Carrera and the orders of the Royal Governor of Chile Francisco de Meneses Brito. It was destroyed during a Mapuche rising in 1694 and rebuilt by Tomás Marín de Poveda with a nearby mission in December of the same year. These were destroyed in the 1723 Mapuche rising. Rebuilt again as Fort Repucura by Governor Antonio de Guill y Gonzaga in 1764, it was destroyed for the last time in the Mapuche uprising of 1766. Repocura River
The Repocura River of the La Araucanía Region of Chile has its source in the eastern slope of the Nahuelbuta Range northwest of the town of Cholchol and runs towards the southeast to join the Cholchol River on its western bank across from Cholchol. It is wide and of a depth that allows the navigation of small boats. The river crosses flat and fertile fields. This valley of the Repocura River was the location of the densely populated Rupucura rehue and was the location of the principal placer gold mines of the old city of La Imperial before the Mapuche Uprising of 1598. Rupucura also was the name of one of the aillarehue of the Lafkenmapu Butalmapu. Rupucura was located on both shores of the Cholchol River, from entrance of the Colpi River, to the Cautín River, and from the Cautin, from hills of Nielol to the Nahuelbuta Range. Juan Ignacio De La Carrera Yturgoyen
Juan Ignacio de la Carrera Yturgoyen (31 July 1620 – 27 March 1682) was a Spanish soldier known for his career in colonial administration of Chile and for being the original patriarch of the Carrera family, a family that had outstanding public participation during the nineteenth century, especially during the Independence of Chile. He was born in Alegria de Oria, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain and died in Santiago, Chile. He married Catalina de Elguea y Cáceres (granddaughter of the Judeo-converso Diego Garcia de Caceres), with whom he had ten children, including Miguel de la Carrera, ancestor of the Carrera family, and Mariana de la Carrera Elguea common trunk on the Montt family tree. The Royal Governor of Chile ruled over the Spanish colonial administrative district called the Captaincy General of Chile, and as a result the Royal Governor also held the title of a Captain General. Mapuche
The Mapuche ( (Mapuche & Spanish: )) are a group of indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, including parts of Patagonia. The collective term refers to a wide-ranging ethnicity composed of various groups who shared a common social, religious, and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage as Mapudungun speakers. Their habitat once extended from Aconcagua Valley to Chiloé Archipelago and later spread eastward to Puelmapu, a land comprising part of the Argentine pampa and Patagonia. Today the collective group makes up over 80% of the indigenous peoples in Chile, and about 9% of the total Chilean population. The Mapuche are particularly concentrated in the Araucanía region. Antonio De Guill Y Gonzaga
Antonio de Guill y Gonzaga (died August 24, 1768) was a Spanish colonial administrator who served as Royal Governor of Panama and Royal Governor of Chile. Arauco War Governor Guill y Gonzaga celebrated the " Parliament of Nacimiento" with the Mapuches in 1764, where he tried to impose his scheme to make them live in towns. This provoked the Mapuche uprising of 1766 under the command of the toqui Curiñancu, which lasted until Agustín de Jáuregui made a peace in 1774. In addition he was ordered to carry out the expulsion of the Jesuits on August 27, 1767, from Chile. During his government, he declared Talcahuano as a “Port of registry". In 1765 he founded the Villa San Luis Gonzaga de Rere and Tucapel Nuevo, the following year San Carlos de Yumbel was founded, all of them in the region of Concepcion. Mapuche Uprising Of 1766
The Mapuche uprising of 1766 was the last major Spanish–Mapuche conflict in Araucanía. Under the influence of a young generation of Jesuits, Governor of Chile Antonio de Guill y Gonzaga attempted to "pacify" Araucanía by settling the unruly Mapuche into series of towns to be founded in their territory. Guill y Gonzaga called Mapuche chiefs to a parliament on December 8, 1764 which lasted until December 10 amidst festivities. In the parliament Mapuches did not accept, but avoided to decline explicitly, the governor's proposal to establish towns in lands.Barros Arana, 1886, p. 231.
