Fort Carroll (Montana)
Fort Carroll, also Carroll Landing Post was a trading post and steamboat landing established in 1874 on the Missouri River in present-day Fergus County, Montana. Garrisoned by 7th U.S. Infantry in the summers of 1874 and 1875, the town of Carroll also sprung up at the landing. Both the town and fort were abandoned in 1882. History Built by the Diamond R Transportation Company as a trading post and steamboat landing on the Missouri River to replace Fort Sheridan and challenge Fort Benton as a transportation and supply center. Fort Carroll was garrisoned by the 7th U.S. Infantry during the summers of 1874 and 1875, then abandoned in 1882 when business diminished. Fergus County is a county in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 11,446. Its county seat is Lewistown. The county was founded in 1885 and named for James Fergus, a Montana politician who was instrumental in creating the county. Zortman, Montana
Zortman is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Phillips County, Montana, United States. Its population was 69 as of the 2010 census. Zortman has a post office with ZIP code 59546. The community includes the Zortman Motel and the Buckhorn Store and Cabins. The Buckhorn Store is the only store in the community. Zortman is a popular place for hunters to have dinner and stay while on their trip. Demographics History Prospectors arrived in the Zortman area in 1868. About 2,000 men came to Zortman in 1884, when Pike Landusky and Dutch Louie discovered gold. By 1893, Pete Zortman and a partner owned the Alabama Mine. Other mines in the area were the Ruby Mine and the Little Ben Mine. It is estimated that local mines had produced $125 million in gold by 1949. 7th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 7th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment in the United States Army. In its 200-year history it has participated in 12 wars, been awarded 78 campaign streamers, and 14 unit decorations. The regiment has served in more campaigns than any other infantry unit in the United States Army. It is known as "The Cottonbalers" for its actions during the Battle of New Orleans, while under the command of Andrew Jackson, when soldiers of the 7th Infantry Regiment held positions behind a breastwork of cotton bales during the British attack. History Of Montana
This is a broad outline history of the state of Montana in the United States. Indigenous peoples Archeological evidence has shown indigenous peoples lived in the area for more than 12,000 years. The oldest dated human burial site in North America was located in 1968 near Wilsall, Montana at what is now known as the Anzick site (named for the discoverers). The human remains of a male infant, found at the Anzick site along with Clovis culture artifacts, establish the earliest known human habitation in what is now Montana. In 2014 a group of scientists released the results of a major project in which they successfully reconstructed the genome of the Anzick boy, providing the first genetic evidence that the Clovis people were descended from Asians. Most indigenous people of the region were nomadic, following the buffalo herds and other game and living by seasonal cycles.
