Forever Ernest
''Forever Ernest'' is an American old-time radio situation comedy. It was broadcast on CBS from April 29, 1946, to July 22, 1946, replacing ''Vox Pop'' on the CBS schedule. It was also carried on CFRB in Canada. Ernest, the title character, is a shy, fearful clerk at a pharmacy. He goes out of his way to help people — an attribute that his girlfriend, Candy, wishes he would change, because she thinks people take advantage of him. Most episodes focus on Ernest's attempts to please Candy. The other main character is fast-talking Duke, Ernest's friend who often gets him into trouble. In his first regular role on radio, Jackie Coogan played the title character, with Lurene Tuttle as Candy and Arthur Q. Bryan as Duke. Dick Joy was the announcer. John Leslie Coogan (October 26, 1914 – March 1, 1984) was an American actor and comedian who began his film career as a child actor in silent films. Charlie Chaplin's film classic ''The Kid'' (1921) made him one of the first child stars in the history of Hollywood. He later sued his mother and stepfather over his squandered film earnings and provoked California to enact the first known legal protection for the earnings of child performers, the California Child Actors Bill, widely known as the Coogan Act. Lurene Tuttle (August 29, 1907 – May 28, 1986) was an American actress and acting coach, who made the transition from vaudeville to radio, and later films and television. Her most enduring impact was as one of network radio's more versatile actresses. Often appearing in 15 shows per week, comedies, dramas, thrillers, soap operas, and crime dramas, she became known as the "First Lady of Radio". Dick Joy (December 28, 1915 – October 31, 1991) was an American radio and television announcer. A journalism major at the University of Southern California, he went on to become well known on network radio and television. Early years Joy's involvement with radio at the local level began when, while a student at USC, he worked part-time for radio stations in Los Angeles, California. His first job after graduation was at KEHE, and he later joined the announcing staff of KNX. John Guedel, (October 9, 1913 in Portland, Indiana – December 14, 2001 in Los Angeles, California) was a radio and television producer who co-created and produced Art Linkletter's and Groucho Marx's most important and successful broadcast properties, including ''You Bet Your Life,'' ''House Party'' and ''People Are Funny''. He also created ''The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet'' and is sometimes credited with the first singing radio commercial in 1937. He was a producer for '' The Charlotte Greenwood Show'' on radio. Bromo-Seltzer was a brand of antacid formulated to relieve pain occurring together with heartburn, upset stomach, or acid indigestion. It originally contained sodium bromide and acetanilide, both toxic substances which were eventually removed. Its final formulation contained the pain reliever acetaminophen and two reactive chemicals—sodium bicarbonate and citric acid—which created effervescence when mixed with water. Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid. History Bromo-Seltzer was invented in 1888 by Isaac E. Emerson and produced by the Emerson Drug Company of Baltimore, Maryland. It was sold in the United States in the form of effervescent granules that were mixed with water before ingestion. Sitcom
A sitcom, a portmanteau of situation comedy, or situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who mostly carry over from episode to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Sitcoms originated in radio, but today are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. ''Vox Pop'' was a popular radio program of interviews, quizzes and human interest features, sometimes titled ''Sidewalk Interviews'' (1936) and ''Voice of the People'' (the name is from the Latin "Vox Populi", meaning "Voice of the People"). It was heard from the early 1930s to the late 1940s. The program was launched in 1932 on KTRH in Houston when advertising salesmen Parks Johnson and Jerry Belcher went into the street with portable microphones to talk to people about the 1932 presidential race between Herbert Hoover and FDR. They continued after the election, and as they developed the premise into a series, it expanded on the Southwest Broadcasting System. Three years later, Johnson and Belcher moved the show to New York and were heard on the Blue Network in 1935 as a summer replacement for Joe Penner. CFRB (1010 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is owned by Bell Media and carries a News/Talk radio format.
