Forestry in Wales refers to the practice of planting, managing, and caring for forests in Wales. History The development of afforestation and the production and supply of timber in Wales come under Natural Resources Wales, as set out in the Forestry Act 1967. In 2013 Natural Resources Wales took over responsibility for Forestry in Wales, In 2020, the Welsh Government launched a long-term re-forestation plan known as the National Forest for Wales. Management Natural Resources Wales is a Welsh Government sponsored body, for the management of all the natural resources of Wales. Afforestation
Afforestation is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees (forestation) in an area where there was no previous tree cover. Many government and non-governmental organizations directly engage in afforestation programs to create forests and increase carbon capture. Afforestation is an increasingly sought-after method to fight climate concerns, as it is known to increase the soil quality and organic carbon levels into the soil, avoiding desertification. Natural Resources Wales ( cy, Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru) is a Welsh Government sponsored body, which became operational from 1 April 2013, when it took over the management of the natural resources of Wales. It was formed from a merger of the Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales, and the Forestry Commission Wales, and also assumed some other roles formerly performed by the Welsh Government. National Forest For Wales
The National Forest for Wales ( cy, Coedwig Genedlaethol i Gymru) is a long-term forestation programme by the Welsh Government, aiming to form a network of woodland throughout Wales. Background Currently only around 15% of Wales is woodlands covering , with forestation (new woodland plantings) efforts in Wales reaching their lowest level since the 1970s, with annual woodland creation not exceeding since 1975. In 2020, only of woodland was planted. Advantages of a wide-spread forestation programme allows for the increase in tree coverage, which acts as a carbon sink helping to address climate change. The new or expanded forests can also support biodiversity, and as a habitat for endangered flora and fauna, such as red squirrels and the spreading bellflower. Countryside Council For Wales
The Countryside Council for Wales (CCW; cy, Cyngor Cefn Gwlad Cymru (CCGC)) was a Welsh Assembly sponsored body responsible for wildlife conservation, landscape and countryside access authority for Wales. It was merged with Forestry Commission Wales, and Environment Agency Wales to form Natural Resources Wales, a single body managing Wales' environment and natural resources, on 1 April 2013. Environment Agency Wales () was a Welsh Government sponsored body that was part of the Environment Agency of England and Wales from 1996 to 2013. Its principal aims were to protect and improve the environment in Wales and to promote sustainable development. On 1 April 2013 the organisation was merged with the Countryside Council for Wales and Forestry Commission Wales into a single environmental body, Natural Resources Wales. It had an operational area defined along its Eastern boundary by the catchments of the River Dee and the River Wye. Forestry Commission
The Forestry Commission is a non-ministerial government department responsible for the management of publicly owned forests and the regulation of both public and private forestry in England. The Forestry Commission was previously also responsible for Forestry in Wales and Scotland. However, on 1 April 2013, Forestry Commission Wales merged with other agencies to become Natural Resources Wales, whilst two new bodies (Forestry and Land Scotland and Scottish Forestry) were established in Scotland on 1 April 2019.
