The For the Republic Party, also known as the Alliance for Defenders of Democracy ( hy, Հանրապետություն կուսակցության համար, translit=Hanrapetut’yun kusakts’ut’yan hamar) is an Armenian political party. History The party was founded on 20 September 2020, during a party congress held in Yerevan. The party currently acts as an extra-parliamentary force. Arman Babajanyan, who was formerly a Bright Armenia MP and then an independent MP in the National Assembly, was nominated as party leader. Following the 2020–2021 Armenian protests, the party supported the decision of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to call snap elections. The party believes in the ideals of the 2018 Armenian revolution, and supports fresh elections in order to accomplish the goals of the revolution and further strengthen democracy in Armenia. Arman Babajanyan
Arman Shamiri Babajanyan ( hy, Արման Շամիրի Բաբաջանյան; born 15 January 1976) is an Armenian politician and journalist whօ previously served as an independent member of the National Assembly of Armenia. Babajanyan was previously the chief editor of the ''Zhamanak-Yerevan'' newspaper. In 2006 Babajanyan recognized himself partially guilty for avoiding mandatory service in Armenian Armed Forces and was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. Babajanyan claimed that the case was political in nature and that orders for his imprisonment came from the president of Armenia. Babajanyan was released from imprisonment in August 2009. Babajanyan was elected to the National Assembly in the 2018 Armenian parliamentary election as a member of the Bright Armenia party's electoral list. The 2018 Armenian Revolution, most commonly known in Armenia as #MerzhirSerzhin ( hy, ՄերժիրՍերժին, meaning "#RejectSerzh"), was a series of anti-government protests in Armenia from April to May 2018 staged by various political and civil groups led by a member of the Armenian parliament — Nikol Pashinyan (head of the Civil Contract party). Protests and marches took place initially in response to Serzh Sargsyan's third consecutive term as the most powerful figure in the government of Armenia and later against the Republican Party-controlled government in general.
