Footsteps is a not-for-profit organization based in New York City that provides educational, vocational, and social support to people who have left or want to leave an Haredi or Hasidic Jewish community in the United States. Mission According to its website, Footsteps provides educational, vocational, professional, social, and legal support to those seeking to enter or explore the world beyond the insular ultra-Orthodox communities in which they were raised. Some people from the Haredi and Hasidic communities who choose to enter mainstream America may feel like "cultural immigrants". They may face cultural disorientation and isolation, coupled with a lack of practical and marketable skills. Shulem Deen
Shulem Deen (born 1974) is an American author, essayist, former Skver ''Hasid'', and critic of Hasidic Judaism. He is the author of the memoir ''All Who Go Do Not Return'' (2015), and is a regular columnist at ''The Forward''. He is also the founding editor of ''Unpious'', a journal for voices critical of Hasidic lifestyle and beliefs. Career Deen first became known as the author of the blog "Hasidic Rebel", which he wrote from 2003 until 2012, and which was the subject of a 2003 feature article in the ''Village Voice''. Deen's blog was the first widely read website by a born Hasid casting doubt on his religious faith. In 2010, Deen launched the ''Unpious'' website, along with "Shtreimel", another ex-Hasidic blogger, and has served as its editor throughout. Faith To Faithless
Faith to Faithless is a non-profit organisation in the United Kingdom dedicated to confronting discrimination against atheists and non-religious people, in particular discrimination towards individuals who have left minority religions. It provides support to people leaving religion and helps them to "come out" to friends and family and gives a platform for individuals to speak out publicly and to find mutual support in the wider atheist, secular and humanist communities. ''One of Us'' is a 2017 documentary feature film that chronicles the lives of three ex-Hasidic Jews from Brooklyn. The film was directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, who also created the documentary ''Jesus Camp''. ''One of Us'' opened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017, and was distributed the following month of October via Netflix, which also financed the film. Young Advocates for Fair Education (styled ''Yaffed'') is an advocacy group dedicated to improving secular education in Haredi Jewish (especially Hasidic) schools. The group advocates for curricular changes within schools, in compliance with New York State law. Naftuli Moster (born 1986) is an American activist. He is the founder and former executive director of Young Advocates for Fair Education (Yaffed), an advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring that students at Hasidic yeshivas in New York City be given a secular education. Moster was named in 2015 as one of the "Forward 50", in recognition of the impact in Jewish social activism and leadership.
