Football is the most popular sport in Eritrea. After being under Ethiopian control, Eritrea gained its independence in 1991 and in 1998 the country became a member of FIFA. History The football in Eritrea was started during colonial times in Italian Asmara, when the Italians ruled the country. The first championship (amateur) was in 1936: the most important teams were "Gruppo Sportivo Cicero" (later '' Asmara Calcio'' and in the late 1940s renamed "GS Asmara"), "Gruppo Rionale Neghelli", "GS Zuco", "GS Melotti", "GS Ferrovieri", "GS Marina' and the "GS Decamerè". In December 1936 the first six indigenous Eritrean teams started to compete in their own league (separate from the Italian league) and the best 3 native clubs (all having Italian names) were: "Ardita", "Savoia", "Vittoria". Asmara ( ), or Asmera, is the capital and most populous city of Eritrea, in the country's Central Region. It sits at an elevation of , making it the sixth highest capital in the world by altitude and the second highest capital in Africa. Ethiopian Football Federation
The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) (Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ እግር ኳስ ፌዴሬሽን) is the governing body of football in Ethiopia. It organizes all tiers of the national football league and the national team. It was one of the founding members of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). History The Ethiopian Football Federation was founded in 1943 and became affiliated with FIFA in 1952. 1962 African Cup Of Nations
The 1962 African Cup of Nations was the third edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa (Confederation of African Football, CAF). It was hosted by Ethiopia. The 1962 FIFA World Cup was the seventh edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football championship for senior men's national teams. Ethiopia National Football Team
The Ethiopia national football team, nicknamed ''ዋሊያ'', after the Walia, represents Ethiopia in men's international football and is controlled by the Ethiopian Football Federation, the governing body for football in Ethiopia. Italo Vassalo
Italo Vassallo (1940 – 30 July 2021) was an Italian-Eritrean footballer. He played for Ethiopia internationally, scoring in their 1962 Africa Cup of Nations final victory over Egypt. His half-brother is Luciano Vassallo, a former footballer for the Ethiopian team. Club career Vassallo made his debut at Hamasien where he won the Ethiopian First Division for the first time in 1957. When Vassallo's half-brother Luciano moved to Cotton Factory Club, Italo joined him at 17 years old. They would go on to win the Ethiopian First Division four times at Cotton FC before retiring in 1973. International career Once Eritrean-born footballers were allowed to be called up for the national team, Italo and Luciano were selected for the 1962 Africa Cup of Nations. Embassoria
Embassoria was an Ethiopian football club based in Mereb Milash ( Tigray). They are a member of the Ethiopian Football Federation national league. In 1975 the team have participated in the African Cup of Champions Clubs. History The club was one of the best in Eritrea when it was a province of Ethiopia. The football club was founded in the city of Mereb Milash and was part of the Ethiopian Football Federation from 1951 to 1998, when the independence of Eritrea was declared. Under the Ethiopia competition system, the club managed to win the Ethiopian Premier League in 1974, its only title so far. Luciano Vassalo
Luciano Vassallo (15 August 1935 – 16 September 2022) was a footballer of Eritrean and Italian origin who played for the Ethiopia national team in the 1960s. He captained the winning team at the 1962 African Cup of Nations, Ethiopia's only trophy to date. He was known for his skill, and mostly for his volleys, free kicks and penalties. He played professionally with Cotton Factory Club along with his half-brother Italo. Early life Luciano was born in Asmara to Vittorio Vassallo, an officer in the Italian rifle regiment and an Eritrean woman called Mebrak Abraham. Vittorio was transferred to Addis Ababa in 1937 and they never heard from him again. As mixed-race children they were marginalised at school and treated with contempt due to the Italian racial laws.
