The Ethiopian Premier League ( Amharic:የኢትዮጵያ ፕሪምየር ሊግ), known as the BetKing Ethiopian Premier League for sponsorship reasons, is the top tier association football league of Ethiopia run by the Ethiopian Premier League Share Company (formerly the Ethiopian Football Federation from 1997 to 2020). Established in 1997 (1990 E.C.), it replaced the former first division (est. 1944). Contested by sixteen clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the other secondary and tertiary leagues in Ethiopia. The league has been an annual competition since the 1997–98 season with Saint George S.C. emerging as the country's leading club in this era with 15 titles (30 first division titles overall). Arba Minch (formerly called Ganta Garo) is a city and separate woreda in the southern part of Ethiopia. "Arba Minch" means "40 Springs", originated from the presence of more than 40 springs. It is located in the Gamo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region about 500 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, at an elevation of 1285 meters above sea level. Ethiopians are the native inhabitants of Ethiopia, as well as the global diaspora of Ethiopia. 2016–17 Ethiopian Premier League
The 2016–17 Ethiopian Premier League is the 70th season of top-tier football in Ethiopia as well as the 19th season of the Premier League. The season began play on 12 November 2016. Saint George SC are the defending champions, having won their 25th championship. The top flight has been expanded to 16-teams up from 14, and is expected to be more competitive and exciting with more matches to play. The bottom three finishers will be relegated to the Ethiopian Super League for 2017-18. Teams A total of 16 teams will contest the league, including 12 sides from the 2015–16 season and four promoted from the Ethiopian Higher League. The four newcomers are Fasil Kenema F.C. Jimma Aba Buna F.C., Addis Ababa City F.C. and Woldia City. Getaneh Kebede ( am, ጌታነህ ከበደ; born 2 April 1992) is an Ethiopian professional footballer who plays for Ethiopian Premier League club Wolkite City and the Ethiopia national team. Club career Getaneh was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He began his club career with Debub Police, before which he moved to Dedebit. He was the 2013 top scorer of the Ethiopian Premier League. On 19 July 2013, it was announced that Getaneh succeeded in a trial with Bidvest Wits and signed a three-year contract with the team. In September 2016 he joined his old club Dedebit.
