Football At The 1908 Summer Olympics
At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, England, an official football tournament between national representative selections was contested for the first time; football had been played between club teams at the Games of 1900 and 1904. Eight entries were accepted, and were included in the tournament draw, including two from France: the main team and a B team. Both Hungary and Bohemia both withdrew after the draw and before the start of play, leaving six teams to contest the tournament. Great Britain won the gold medal representing the United Kingdom ( Great Britain and Ireland), although all the players were from England. Sophus "Krølben" Nielsen of Denmark set a record by scoring 10 goals in a 17–1 win over France A. Niels Bohr
Niels Henrik David Bohr (; 7 October 1885 – 18 November 1962) was a Danish physicist who made foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Clyde Purnell
Clyde Honeysett Purnell (14 May 1877 – 14 August 1934) was an English amateur footballer who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Club career Purnell was born on 14 May 1877 in Ryde, Isle of Wight, the son of John and Emily Purnell. He was an avid sportsman being involved in cycling, cricket, tobogganing, and billiards. He became the captain of the Olympic Sporting Club at the age of 18 (1895). From 1897 to 1902 he was on the winning team in the Lawn Tennis Shield competition. In 1905 he picked up the runners-up medal at Shepherd's Bush in the FA Amateur Cup, but two years later he got gold with Clapton F.C., scoring once in the final in a 6–0 win over Eston United. Frederick Chapman (footballer)
Frederick William Chapman (10 May 1883 – 7 September 1951) was an English amateur footballer who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Club career Chapman played for Notts Magdala, Nottingham Forest and South Nottingham, making three Football League appearances for Forest. He also guested for Port Vale in a league match against local rivals Stoke Reserves on 23 April 1910; Vale were 2–0 up when the match was abandoned due to a pitch invasion. In the summer of 1910 he agreed to assist the Vale "in times of need", but he was not called into action for the club again. He went on to co-found English Wanderers and later played for Oxford City, South Nottingham, Southall and Brentford. He also guested for Northern Nomads and Notts County. Arthur Berry (footballer)
Arthur Berry (3 January 1888 – 15 March 1953) was an English amateur footballer who competed in the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. Family Arthur Berry's fatheEdwin 'Ted' Berry(1858-1925), a solicitor by trade, was a founder member of St. Domingo's FC in 1878. A year later the church team became Everton F.C. as they began to attract players from outwith the congregation. Ted Berry played as an outside-right for Everton for three seasons prior to the formation of the Football League in 1888. He later served as chairman and director of Liverpool F.C. from 1904-1909, overseeing the club's promotion back to the top flight and second League Championship title in successive seasons, 1904/05 and 1905/06. Vivian Woodward
Vivian John Woodward (3 June 1879 – 31 January 1954) was an English footballer who enjoyed the peak of his career from the turn of the 20th century to the outbreak of the First World War. He played for Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. He captained Great Britain to gold medals at the 1908 Olympics in London and in Stockholm in 1912. Woodward's tally of 29 goals in 23 matches for England remained a record from 1911 to 1958; his strike rate of 1.26 goals per game is the second highest for an England player. He served in the British Army during the First World War, and as a result missed out on Chelsea's run to their first-ever FA Cup final in 1915. Harold Stapley
Henry Stapley (29 April 1883 – 29 April 1937) was an English amateur footballer who played for West Ham United and Glossop. Internationally, he played for the England amateur team and competed for Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics, where he scored 6 goals. Club career Stapley played for Manor Park Albion, Bromley and Norwich CEYMS before joining Reading, where he played for the reserve and amateur teams. He then played for Woodford Town, where he was made captain, before signing for West Ham United, then of the Southern League, on 28 September 1905. He continued to play for Woodford Town after his signing. Stapley made his West Ham debut against Portsmouth on 23 December 1905 and scored the only goal of the game. He spent three seasons at Upton Park and was the Irons' top scorer in all three, even though his job as a schoolteacher prevented him from traveling to certain midweek away games. Vilhelm Wolfhagen
Vilhelm "Wolle" Wolfhagen (11 November 1889 – 5 July 1958) was a Danish footballer who scored 14 goals in 18 games for the Denmark national team and won silver medals at the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. He played his entire career with Kjøbenhavns Boldklub (KB), with whom he won several Danish football championships. Wolfhagen took part in the first official Danish national team game, played at the 1908 Summer Olympics, as he scored four goals in the 9-0 victory against France B from his favoured position of forward. Nils Middelboe
Nils Middelboe (5 October 1887 – 21 September 1976) was a Danish amateur track and field athlete and football player as well as a football referee and leader. He represented the Denmark national football team at the 1908, 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics, winning silver medals in 1908 and 1912. He was the first ever goalscorer for the Danish national football team, when he scored in Denmark's debut game at the 1908 Summer Olympics.
