Football At The 1968 Summer Olympics
The 1968 Olympic football tournament was played as part of the 1968 Summer Olympics. The tournament features 16 men's national teams from five continental confederations. The 16 teams are drawn into four groups of four and each group plays a round-robin tournament. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams advanced to the knockout stage, beginning with the quarter-finals and culminating with the gold medal match at the Azteca Stadium on 26 October 1968. This was the first time an Asian team won a medal, Japan claiming bronze. Kunishige Kamamoto
is a former Japanese football player, manager and politician. He won the bronze medal with the Japan national team at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with seven goals, and is the all-time leading goalscorer for Japan. He served as a member of the House of Councillors between 1995 and 2001. Early life Kamamoto was born in Kyoto on April 15, 1944. He grew up in Kyoto and attended Yamashiro High School. Then, he was on to Waseda University School of commerce. He became a top scorer in the Kanto university league for 4 years in a row. He also won the 1963 and the 1966 Emperor's Cup at university. This was the last time a university team won the Emperor's Cup. His major was commerce and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Waseda University in 1966. Iván Menczel (14 December 1941 – 26 November 2011) was a Hungarian football midfielder and Olympic champion. Lajos Kocsis
Lajos Kocsis (18 June 1947 in Szeged – 9 October 2000 in Budapest) was a Hungarian football midfielder, who played for Bp. Honvéd SE. He was an Olympic champion in 1968. Club career Kocsis started his career in his native town of Szeged, with third-division Szegedi VSE. Lajos became a first-division player in 1966, having been transferred to then first division Salgótarjáni BTC. A year later, he moved to Budapest to play for Honvéd, where he spent ten years and became one of Hungary's best-known and most popular football players. Kocsis was considered as Hungary's most talented footballer since Ferenc Puskás, some stating he was even more talented than his famous predecessor. László Fazekas (born 15 October 1947) is a Hungarian former football player who played the third most international games for the Hungarian national team.
