Fokker F.V
The Fokker F.Vde Leeuw pp. 34-7 was a Dutch airliner created by Fokker in the 1920s. The most interesting property of the F.V was that it could be configured either as a biplane or a monoplane, as the lower wing could be removed. It was not a success and only one was built. Design and development There are no surviving records of the early thinking of Anthony Fokker that lead to this unusual aircraft, designed by Reinhold Platz. The idea was that the biplane configuration would be able to lift greater loads because of the greater wing area, whereas the monoplane version would suffer lower drag and be faster. The upper wing was a typical Fokker thick, internally braced design, with ailerons projecting beyond the wingtips, all in the style of the earlier F.III and F.IV aircraft. Fokker was a Dutch aircraft manufacturer named after its founder, Anthony Fokker. The company operated under several different names. It was founded in 1912 in Berlin, Germany, and became famous for its fighter aircraft in World War I. In 1919 the company moved its operations to the Netherlands. During its most successful period in the 1920s and 1930s, it dominated the civil aviation market. Fokker went into bankruptcy in 1996, and its operations were sold to competitors. An airliner is a type of aircraft for transporting passengers and air cargo. Such aircraft are most often operated by airlines. Anthony Fokker
Anton Herman Gerard "Anthony" Fokker (6 April 1890 – 23 December 1939) was a Dutch aviation pioneer, aviation entrepreneur, aircraft designer, and aircraft manufacturer. He produced fighter aircraft in Germany during the First World War such as the Eindecker monoplanes, the Dr.1 triplane and the D.VII biplane. After the Treaty of Versailles forbade Germany to produce aircraft, Fokker moved his business to the Netherlands. There, his company was responsible for a variety of successful aircraft including the Fokker F.VII/3m trimotor, a successful passenger aircraft of the inter-war years. He died in New York in 1939. Later authors suggest he was personally charismatic but unscrupulous in business and a controversial character. Reinhold Platz
Reinhold Platz (16 January 1886 – 15 September 1966) was a German aircraft designer and manufacturer in service of the Dutch company Fokker. Platz was hired by Fokker in 1912 as a welder. His first hands-on projects were to weld the frame parts for the Fokker Spin. Platz became the head designer at the Fokker factory in Schwerin in 1916. Platz had no higher education like Anthony Fokker, but was a man of practical knowledge. This turned the two men into a strong team, in which Fokker was able to bring forth new revolutionary ideas to aircraft design, while Platz implemented them in prototype aircraft. Platz became the head designer at the Fokker factory in Amsterdam after World War I. Platz is now largely credited with designing the innovative Fokker D.VII fighter aircraft. The Rolls-Royce Eagle was the first aircraft engine to be developed by Rolls-Royce Limited.
