Flåvær Lighthouse
Flåvær fyr is a coastal lighthouse on the island of Vardholmen in the Flåvær islands in the Herøyfjord in the municipality of Herøy on west coast of Norway. The lighthouse is located southwest of Fosnavåg and Eggesbønes and north of the island of Gurskøya. The tall lighthouse was first built in 1870, and it was renovated in 1887 and 1914. In 1952 it was connected to the electrical power grid, and it was fully automated in 1979. Flåvær
Flåvær is group of islets and skerries in the Herøyfjord in the municipality of Herøy in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The islands are located north of the island Gurskøya and southwest of the town of Fosnavåg. It includes the islets ''Flåvær'', ''Husholmen'', ''Torvholmen'', and ''Vardholmen'' (the Norwegian term ''holme'' translates as islet, signifying that these are small). History In earlier times, there was extensive activity at Flåvær due to its central position in the Herøyfjord. Flåvær was both a fishing station and a store where the fishing fleet could get supplies close to the fishing fields. It provided useful harbor and mooring facilities. In the days of the rich herring fisheries, the harbor was often crowded with fishing vessels, and as many as 1,500 people gathered there. From 1873 to 1976 there was a post office. Herøy is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is part of the Sunnmøre region. The administrative centre is the town of Fosnavåg on the island of Bergsøya. Fresnel Lens
A Fresnel lens ( ; ; or ) is a type of composite compact lens developed by the French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788–1827) for use in lighthouses. It has been called "the invention that saved a million ships." Fosnavåg
is a List of towns and cities in Norway, town in the List of municipalities of Norway, municipality of Herøy, Møre og Romsdal, Herøy in Møre og Romsdal counties of Norway, county, Norway. It is the administrative center of the municipality of Herøy. The town is located on the island of Bergsøya, Herøy, Bergsøya, and it includes the Eggesbønes area on the south side of the island. The coast of Norway is 100,915 km long and there have been a total of 212 lighthouses along it, but no more than 154 have ever been operational at the same time. The first, Lindesnes Lighthouse, opened in 1655; the newest Lighthouse, Anda, was finished in 1932. The first Lighthouses were private operations, but in 1821 the government made the Channel and Harbor Inspector responsible for Lighthouses in Norway. A dedicated Lighthouse Administration was set up in 1841. The Lighthouses are today mostly automated and since 1974, run by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Two lightvessels had been operated along the Norwegian coast. "Enigheden" off Ålesund from 1856 vas replaced with Lepsøyrev Lighthouse in 1879, and "Ildjernsflu" moored off Nesodden from 1914 until it was scrapped in 1968.
