A fluid flowing around an object exerts a force on it. Lift is the component of this force that is perpendicular to the oncoming flow direction. It contrasts with the drag force, which is the component of the force parallel to the flow direction. Savonius wind turbines are a type of vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT), used for converting the force of the wind into torque on a rotating shaft. The turbine consists of a number of aerofoils, usually—but not always—vertically mounted on a rotating shaft or framework, either ground stationed or tethered in airborne systems. Origin The Savonius wind turbine was invented by the Finnish engineer Sigurd Johannes Savonius in 1922 and patented in 1926. Sigurd Johannes Savonius (2 November 1884 – 31 May 1931) was a Finnish people, Finnish architect and inventor. He is known especially for the Savonius wind turbine, which he invented in 1924. Life and work Savonius was born in Hämeenlinna, Grand Duchy of Finland, to Albin Laurentius Johannes Savonius (1856–1906) and his wife Anna Elisabeth née Rydman (1859–1921). He was one of three sons, together with his brothers Maximilian Lars Helge and Odert Albin. As a young man he enjoyed experimenting with explosives. Butler Ames (August 22, 1871 – November 6, 1954) was an American politician, engineer, soldier and businessman.
