Fleet Street (album)
''Fleet Street'' (also known as ''Cheese'' for its distinctive album artwork), released in 2004, is the eleventh studio album by the collegiate comedy a cappella group the Stanford Fleet Street Singers. It was the first entirely original album in collegiate a cappella, for which it received critical recognition. Background A cappella, and especially collegiate a cappella, has its roots in covers of popular music. As a cappella proliferated on college campuses across the United States in the 1990s, the genre found favor with audiences by reinterpreting familiar songs. In 2016, music professor Joshua Duchan observed that audiences are drawn to a cappella because "the repertory includes a lot of covers, and it's often interesting to hear how popular songs... are reconfigured for the a cappella medium." Stanford Fleet Street Singers
The Stanford Fleet Street Singers (Fleet Street) is a comedy a cappella group from Stanford University. The group performs original songs and sketch comedy, and wears a uniform of black vests and red bow ties. Fleet Street is perhaps best known for having published the first collegiate a cappella album composed entirely of original music. In total, Fleet Street has released 13studio albums and has received adozennational awards. Fleet Street was founded in 1981, as a collegiate a cappella group focused on comedy, theatricality, and barbershop harmony. ''50-Minute Fun Break'', released in 1992, is the fourth studio album by the collegiate comedy a cappella group the Stanford Fleet Street Singers. It was a landmark album in the a cappella genre for its pioneering recording techniques and use of studio effects. The album won critical acclaim for its studio work, including a special award in engineering from the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, although some critics criticized the studio engineering as "intrusive." Vocal percussion is the art of creating sounds with one's mouth that approximate, imitate, or otherwise serve the same purpose as a percussion instrument, whether in a group of singers, an instrumental ensemble, or solo. In Western music Recent musicological research points at Brazilian songwriter and musician Marcos Valle as a pioneer of vocal percussion. Da Vinci's Notebook
Da Vinci's Notebook (or simply DVN) was a comedic a cappella singing group. Former Artists-in-Residence at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, they performed specials on Comedy Central and PBS, and spent time as the "house band" on Washington radio's WBIG-FM. They were also regular guests on the nationally syndicated ''Bob and Tom'' radio show. History Formation and first years (1993–1997) In Alexandria, Virginia, during the summer of 1993, Bernie Muller-Thym, Greg "Storm" DiCostanzo, Paul Sabourin and Richard Hsu banded together to join a six-man a cappella group that was advertised in the Washington City Paper. The Bobs
The Bobs were an a cappella vocal group founded in San Francisco, California in the early 1980s. They moved to Seattle, Washington and were active recording and touring throughout the United States, Canada and Europe until their farewell show at the Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA, on October 21, 2017. Background Founding members Gunnar Madsen and Matthew Stull decided to form an a cappella group when they left their jobs as deliverers of singing telegrams in San Francisco. Instead of singing more traditional doo-wop songs, The Bobs started out with original arrangements of their own songs and songs like " Helter Skelter" and "Psycho Killer". Stephen Sondheim
Stephen Joshua Sondheim (; March 22, 1930November 26, 2021) was an American composer and lyricist.
