First United Methodist Church (Peoria, Illinois)
First United Methodist Church (First UMC) is located in downtown Peoria, in the U.S. state of Illinois. The congregation was established in the early 1800s. It is the oldest Protestant church in Peoria. History Forerunners The history of the First United Methodist Church begins with the Methodist circuit riders who first came to Illinois in 1825. Rev. Jesse Walker came to Peoria County shortly after it was formed. Sources differ on the exact date, but in the 1820s, Walker started a ministry in Peoria between 1824 and 1828. The Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) was organized in November 1833. Without a church building, the congregation met in homes or in the courthouse. The first building, a frame structure, was constructed in 1840 on Madison and Fulton. With an addition in 1844, the structure was 43 ft by 40 ft. Jesse Walker (Methodist)
Jesse Walker (June 9, 1766 - October 5, 1835) was the Buckingham County, Virginia-born Methodist minister who built Missouri's first Methodist church in the predominantly French-Catholic city of St. Louis, Missouri in 1819, and the first Methodist church in Chicago, Illinois in 1831. He organized this first permanent Methodist group in Missouri at St. Louis on January 7, 1821, after previously finding 20 members in 1807. On August 10, 1821, Missouri entered the Union as the 24th state. In 1822, the Methodists held their annual conference in St. Louis. Early life Walker was born into a Baptist family, but he joined the Methodist Church at the age of 10. Walker married Susannah Webly, who was from a staunch Virginia Episcopalian family. Peoria Civic Center is an entertainment complex located in downtown Peoria, Illinois. Designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Philip Johnson and John Burgee, it has an arena, theater, exhibit hall and meeting rooms. It opened in 1982 and completed an expansion to its lobby and meeting facilities in 2007. On the grounds of the Peoria Civic Center sits the massive "Sonar Tide," the last and largest sculpture of the pioneer of abstract minimalism Ronald Bladen. History The site of the Civic Center includes the spot at Liberty Street and Jefferson Street, where Moses and Lucy Pettengill lived from 1836 to 1862; that house was part of the Underground Railroad and Moses was also an Underground Railroad "conductor". It has been viewed more than 5 million times on YouTube. In the video, an amateur singer, Jon Daker, is accompanied by a pianist as he sings renditions of "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today" and "That's Amore." While performing he uses unusual phrasing, sings in a pseudo-operatic voice, and forgets song lyrics. Background The video was uploaded to YouTube and EBaum's World in 2006.
