First Contact (1983 Film)
''First Contact'' is a 1983 Australian documentary film by Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson which recounts the incursion of gold-prospecting Australians into the unexplored interior highlands of New Guinea in 1930, then inhabited by a prosperous native population numbering in the region of one million. It is based on the book of the same name by the same authors. Inhabitants of the region and surviving members of the Leahy brothers' gold prospecting party recount their astonishment at this unforeseen meeting. The film includes both moving and still pictures taken by Michael Leahy, leader of the party, and contemporary footage of the island's terrain. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It won Best Feature Documentary at the 1983 Australian Film Institute Awards. Robin Anderson
Robin Anderson (1950 – 2002) was an Australian award-winning documentary filmmaker. Career Anderson was in born in Perth, Western Australia in 1950. After graduating from high school in 1967 she spent a year in Europe including 6 months in Paris. Back in Australia she studied economics at the University of Western Australia and graduated three years later with honors and a federal government scholarship to study for master's degree in sociology at the Columbia University in New York City. There she studied under Herbert J. ''Black Harvest'' is a 1992 Australian-Papua New Guinea documentary directed by Australians Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson. It is the third film in 'The Highlands Trilogy', concluding the series which includes the 1983 film ''First Contact'' and the 1989 film ''Joe Leahy's Neighbours''. The film, made in association with The Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies with assistance from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, was produced by Arundel Productions, which produced all the films in the Highland Trilogy. Synopsis The documentary continued the story from the previous Highland Trilogy Films, exploring the relationship between the half-white, half-native Joe Leahy, who was by then tribal leader, and his neighbours, the Ganiga people. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. ''Cinema Papers'' was an Australian bi-monthly film magazine which ran from 1974 to 2001. It absorbed ''Filmviews'' in 1989. History and profile ''Cinema Papers'' was first published as a nationally distributed magazine in January 1974. The name was derived, via a single issue magazine produced by students at La Trobe University in October 1967, from the influential French journal ''Cahiers du Cinéma''. The magazine was published on a bimonthly basis and had its headquarters in Melbourne. One of the owners was MTV Publishing Ltd. In 1989 ''Cinema Papers'' absorbed another film magazine, ''Filmviews'', but declining sales saw the magazine end in 1999. Cinéma Du Réel
Cinéma du Réel (Cinema of the Real) is an international documentary film festival organized by the BPI-Bibliothèque publique d'information (Public Information Library) in Paris and was founded in 1978. The festival presents about 200 films per year in several sections by experienced documentary directors as well as first timers. The screenings take place at the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and in several movie theaters partners of the festival. The 37th edition of Cinéma du réel took place from in March 2015.
