First Baptist Church (Toronto)
First Baptist Church is a Baptist in Toronto, Ontario, affiliated with Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec. It is both the first Baptists, Baptist congregation in Toronto and the oldest black institution in the city. Formed by fugitive Slavery, enslaved persons, the church played a large role in the Abolitionism, abolitionist movement, including hosting lectures against slavery and offering aid to fugitives. In its long history, the church's location has changed multiple times. Today it holds service at 101 Huron Street. History The church was formed by 12 fugitive enslaved persons in 1826, under the leadership of Elder Washington Christian. Reverend Christian was a former enslaved individual who established multiple Baptist churches in Canada. First Baptist Church of Los Angeles is a Baptist church located at 760 South Westmoreland Avenue in Los Angeles, California. It was designated Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument 237 in 1981. History On September 4, 1874, believers came together to pray. In the beginning, they met on North Spring Street, but by 1884, they moved into its first building at the corner of Sixth and Fort Streets, until 1898. Its construction was funded by donations from Isaac Newton Van Nuys (1836-1912) and James Boon Lankershim (1850-1931). The second building, constructed in 1897, was located at 727 South Flower Street, and Dwight L. Moody (1837-1899) attended its dedication. Billy Sunday (1862-1935) preached there in 1913. The First Baptist Church, also known as the Bell Towers, is a historic church complex built in 1931 in Bakersfield, California and presently used as an office building. The structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on January 2, 1979. Structure Constructed in 1931, the structure was built of reinforced concrete, with the outside finish, simulating brick, created by a poured cast. Red, Spanish tile shingles cover the roof. A prominent, 70 foot (21 meter) bell tower stands in the center of the south facade, forming part of what was the vestibule and narthex of the church. The south side of the church also features large white oak doors with decorative arches above them. Blind arches and mullions rise to the roof level, giving the structure its Romanesque character. The First Baptist Church is a historic church at the junction of Pine and Carruth Streets in Marvell, Arkansas. It is a large brick masonry structure, with vernacular Collegiate Gothic features. Its main sanctuary and vestibule area occupy the full width and height of the building, while at the northern end there are two stories of offices. The building has a flat roof set behind a brick parapet. Its main facade is divided into three sections, with the main entrance in the western tower-like section. The central bay has a large wood-frame Gothic window, while the flanking bays both have Gothic-arched windows at the second level. The congregation was founded in 1877, and this is its second building. It is the only Collegiate Gothic building in Marvell.
