Firebase Panther III
Firebase Panther III is a former United States Army firebase southwest of Huế, Thừa Thiên Province in central Vietnam. History The base was established on the east bank of the Tả Trạch River 15 km south-southeast of Huế and 11 km southwest of Phu Bai Combat Base. The base was established in August 1968 in support of Operation Nevada Eagle and occupied by the 2nd Battalion, 505th Infantry Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 321st Artillery Regiment. Fire Support Base
A fire support base (FSB, firebase or FB) is a temporary military encampment to provide artillery fire support to infantry operating in areas beyond the normal range of fire support from their own base camps. FSBs follow a number of plans, their shape and construction varying based on the terrain they occupy and the projected garrison. Widely used during the Vietnam War, the concept continues to be used in military operations. Under the original concept of the artillery fire support base, a 6-gun battery set up with one howitzer in the center to fire illumination rounds during night attacks and serve as the base's main registration gun. The other 5 howitzers were arranged around it in a "star" pattern. Huế
Huế () is the capital of Thừa Thiên Huế province in central Vietnam and was the capital of Đàng Trong from 1738 to 1775 and of Vietnam during the Nguyễn dynasty from 1802 to 1945. Thừa Thiên Huế () is a province in the North Central Coast region of Vietnam, approximately in the center of the country. Phu Bai Combat Base
Phu Bai Combat Base (also known as Phu Bai Airfield and Camp Hochmuth) is a former U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps base south of Huế, in central Vietnam. History 1962-5 The Army Security Agency, operating under cover of the 3rd Radio Research Unit (3rd RRU), established a radio facility at Phu Bai in 1963, 12 km southeast of Huế on Highway 1. The operational unit was later redesignated as the 8th Radio Research Field Station (8th RRFS). 1965-7 On 10 April 1965 Task Force Alpha of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines was landed by helicopter from Da Nang Air Base to secure the area. Operation Nevada Eagle
Operation Nevada Eagle was a security operation during the Vietnam War in Thừa Thiên Province, that took place from 17 May 1968 to 28 February 1969. Background The mission of Operation Nevada Eagle was to protect Huế and the surrounding districts. General Olinto M. Barsanti stationed the 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, in the lowlands to help South Vietnamese forces defend Revolutionary Development areas and to prevent the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and Vietcong (VC) from acquiring rice during the summer harvest. 505th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (505th PIR), originally the 505th Infantry Regiment, is an airborne infantry regiment of the United States Army, one of four infantry regiments of the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army, with a long and distinguished history. 321st Field Artillery Regiment
The 321st Field Artillery Regiment (321st FAR) is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army. A parent regiment under the U.S. Army Regimental System, the 321st FAR currently has one active battalion, the 3rd Battalion, 321st FAR, assigned to the 18th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Bragg, NC.
