Finland In The Eurovision Song Contest 1977
Finland was represented by Monica Aspelund, with the song "Lapponia", at the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 7 May in London. Before Eurovision National final The Finnish final was held on February 22nd at the YLE TV Studios in Helsinki. It was hosted by Tutteli Mensonen. The winner was chosen by regional juries. At Eurovision On the night of the final Aspelund performed 16th in the running order following Italy and preceding Belgium. The Finnish entry was conducted by Ossi Runne. At the close of voting "Lapponia" had picked up 50 points, placing Finland 10th of the 18 entries. Monica Aspelund
Monica Aspelund (born 16 July 1946 in Vaasa) is a Finnish singer. She is the older sister of Ami Aspelund. Life and career Born into a family of Swedish speaking Finns, Aspelund danced and sang in talent shows from an early age, making her recording debut at age fourteen with "Katso, kenguru loikkaa" a children's song recorded in the autumn of 1960. Aspelund's subsequent singles included Finnish language covers of international hits such as "Tahdon kaikki kirjeet takaisin" ("I'm Gonna Knock on Your Door" - Eddie Hodges, 1961), Lady Sunshine ja Mister Moon" ("Lady Sunshine und Mister Moon" - Conny Froboess, 1962) and "En Ilman Häntä Olla" (" I Couldn't Live Without Your Love" - Petula Clark, 1966). As a young woman Aspelund worked as a commercial artist not embarking on a full-time singing career until 1973 when her recordings included a Finnish cover of the Ireen Sheer hit "Goodbye Mama". Aarno Raninen
Aarno Raninen (27 April 1944 – 3 September 2014) was a Finnish singer, songwriter and musician. His main instrument was piano but he has also mastered violin, cello and accordion. Born in Kotka, Raninen began his musical studies at a young age. After he moved to Helsinki in 1966 he got a job as a studio conductor at Musiikki-Fazer. While working there he made a lot of cooperative work with the likes of songwriter Juha Vainio. Later on Raninen went to work in Discophon where he wrote lyrics for many Finnish musicians, such as Seija Simola, Carola, Tauno Palo, Vesa-Matti Loiri, Monica Aspelund, Heikki Kinnunen, Arja Koriseva, Erkki Liikanen and the Soitinmenot-ensemble. An important acquaintance for Raninen has been the songwriter for film and television, Pertti "Pertsa" Reponen. The Eurovision Song Contest 1977 was the 22nd edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in London, United Kingdom, following the country's victory at the with the song "Save Your Kisses for Me" by Brotherhood of Man. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the contest was held at the Wembley Conference Centre on 7 May 1977, marking the first time the event took place in the month of May since the first contest in . Lars Anders Fredrik "Lasse" Mårtenson (24 September 1934 – 14 May 2016) was a Finnish singer, composer, actor, and theater conductor. Mårtenson was born in Helsinki. Hortto Kaalo
Hortto Kaalo is a Finnish gypsy music band performing in both Finnish and Romani. They specialize in Eastern European and French gypsy music. The band's name in Romani means 'real Roma'. The group was formed in 1969 by Feija Åkerlund, Marko Putkonen, Taisto Lundberg, and Heikki Nyman, although Nyman left the group shortly afterwards. Hortto Kaalo has often performed together with the Finnish Romani singer . Hortto Kaalo's debut single, the protest song ''Miksi ovet ei aukene meille?'' ( 'Why doors won't open for us'), came out in 1970, and has been credited for contributing to the illegalization of racial discrimination in Finland. Juha Vainio
Juha Harri "Junnu" Vainio, also known as Juha "Watt" Vainio (10 May 1938 in Kotka, Finland – 29 October 1990, Gryon, Switzerland) was a Finnish lyricist, singer, composer and teacher. With the lyrics or music to over 2,400 songs to his name, Vainio is one of Finland's most prolific lyricists along with Sauvo Puhtila, Reino Helismaa and Vexi Salmi. Vainio enjoyed a short professional career as a teacher at Kymenranta Primary School. Vainio began writing songs in the early 1960s and continued until his death. Apart from his home town Kotka, he lived for several years in Helsinki and Espoo. In his last years Vainio lived in Gryon, Switzerland, where he died of a heart attack in October 1990. He is buried in the family grave in Helsinki. He was given the nickname "Watt" on account of a song on his first solo record, the 1964 ''Paras rautalankayhtye'' ("The Best Rautalanka Band"). Seija Saara Maria Simola (25 September 1944 Helsinki – 21 August 2017 Vantaa), married Franzén, was a Finnish singer. She began her career musical in the mid-1960s in the band Eero Seija & Kristian Trio, and her debut solo album was released in 1970: ''Seija Simola 1''. The 1970s would be her most successful decade. In 1978, she represented Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) at the Eurovision Song Contest 1978. There she performed the entry '' Anna rakkaudelle tilaisuus (Give love a chance)'', on 22 April 1978. Viktor Savvich Klimenko (born 24 November 1942) is a singer who made himself known as the "Singing Cossack". Biography Klimenko was born in Karelia, to a Russian Kuban Cossack father, Savva Klimenko, and a Russian mother, Olga Glotova. A few years after his birth, his family moved to Finland. There, he became a musician and appeared in several films, mostly appearing as himself. The Eurovision Song Contest 1965 was his first appearance outside of Finland; his song didn't earn any points in the competition. In 1970, Klimenko released the album ''Stenka Rasin'' across Europe. The album, containing Russian songs, went gold in the Finnish market—the first record to do so in Finland. Later, it was certified platinum. Mikko Alatalo
Mikko Tapio Alatalo (born 1 May 1951) is a Finnish musician and politician. Career Alatalo was born in Kuivaniemi, now a part of Ii, Finland. He is mostly known for his long and successful musical career. His style is primarily seen as children's music and folk music but he has contributed to other genres as well, including a long partnership with rock musician Juice Leskinen. A significant part of his songs were co-written with Harri Rinne. His most famous songs include "Maalaispoika oon" ("I'm a country boy"), "Hasardi", "Rokkilaulaja" ("Rock singer"). In the 1980s his style changed from rock more towards schlager. He also made some children's songs (including "Känkkäränkkä", "Taitaa tulla kesä") that became famous. Tabula Rasa (Finnish Band)
Tabula Rasa was a major progressive rock group from Finland founded in 1972, however the band split up in 1977. History The original members were Heikki Silvennoinen, Asko Pakkanen, and Tapio Suominen. British rock band Cream might have been their biggest source of inspiration though they followed contemporary trends of prog-rock. Jethro Tull and King Crimson were direct progressive rock influences from the United Kingdom. In 1975, under the record label Love Records, they published their first album ''"Tabula Rasa"'' as well as single ''"Prinssi/Lähtö''". The debut album has been pretty well regarded though Mikko Alatalo's political lyrics have been somewhat controversial.
