Filippo Carandini
Filippo Carandini (6 September 1729 - 28 August 1810) was an Italian Roman Catholic cardinal. Biography He was born in Pesaro to the aristocratic Carandini family. He was elevated to Cardinal in January 1787. He participated in the Papal Conclave of 1799-1800, held in Venice. In 1790, he accused prince Sigismondo Chigi of trying to poison him in retribution for the cardinal having counseled his second wife, Donna Giovanna Medici di Ottaiano to abandon her new husband. A cardinal ( la, Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae cardinalis, literally 'cardinal of the Holy Roman Church') is a senior member of the clergy of the Catholic Church. Cardinals are created by the ruling pope and typically hold the title for life. Collectively, they constitute the College of Cardinals. Their most solemn responsibility is to elect a new pope in a conclave, almost always from among themselves (with a few historical exceptions), when the Holy See is vacant. During the period between a pope's death or resignation and the election of his successor, the day-to-day governance of the Holy See is in the hands of the College of Cardinals. Pesaro () is a city and ''comune'' in the Italian region of Marche, capital of the Province of Pesaro e Urbino, on the Adriatic Sea. According to the 2011 census, its population was 95,011, making it the second most populous city in the Marche, after Ancona. Pesaro was dubbed the "Cycling City" (''Città della Bicicletta'') by the Italian environmentalist association Legambiente in recognition of its extensive network of bicycle paths and promotion of cycling. The House of Carandini (originally Risi) is an old Italian noble family, whose members occupied many important ecclesiastical and political positions. History Records of the family go back at least to the 12th century, when Emperor Frederick Barbarossa gave the family the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire; by the 15th century, the Carandinis had risen to political prominence in Modena. The 1799–1800 papal conclave followed the death of Pope Pius VI on 29 August 1799 and led to the selection of Cardinal Barnaba Niccolò Maria Luigi Chiaramonti, who took the name ''Pius VII'', on 14 March 1800. Sigismondo Chigi
''Sigismondo'' is an operatic 'dramma' in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa. The opera was not a success and Rossini later re-used some of its music in ''Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra'', ''The Barber of Seville'', and ''Adina''. Performance history ''Sigismondo'' was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, on 26 December 1814, with revivals in Cremona, Reggio Emilia, Padua and Senigallia (all in 1819), Florence and Siena (both in 1820) and finally in Bologna (1827). Pompeo Batoni
Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (25 January 1708 – 4 February 1787) was an Italian painter who displayed a solid technical knowledge in his portrait work and in his numerous allegorical and mythological pictures. The high number of foreign visitors travelling throughout Italy and reaching Rome during their "Grand Tour" led the artist to specialize in portraits. Batoni won international fame largely thanks to his customers, mostly British of noble origin, whom he portrayed, often with famous Italian landscapes in the background. Such Grand Tour portraits by Batoni were in British private collections, thus ensuring the genre's popularity in Great Britain. One generation later, Sir Joshua Reynolds would take up this tradition and become the leading English portrait painter.
