Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition
The Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition took place in Fort Worth, Texas, from May 25 to June 10, 2017. Commissioned work All competitors were required to play the commissioned work in their 45-minute Preliminary Round recital. It was ''Toccata on " L'homme armé"'', a 4- to 6-minute work composed by pianist-composer jury member Marc-André Hamelin. Van Cliburn International Piano Competition
The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (The Cliburn) is an American piano competition by The Cliburn, first held in 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas and hosted by the Van Cliburn Foundation. Initially held at Texas Christian University, the competition has been held at the Bass Performance Hall since 2001. The competition is named in honour of Van Cliburn, who won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition, in 1958. The Van Cliburn Competition is held once every four years, in the year of United States presidential inaugurations. The winners and runners-up receive substantial cash prizes, plus concert tours at world-famous venues where they are able to perform pieces of their choice. While Cliburn was alive, he did not serve as a judge in the competition, provide financial support, or work in its operations. Dmitri Alexeev (pianist)
Dmitri Alexeev (russian: Дмитрий Константинович Алексеев, ''Dmitrij Konstantinovič Alekseev'', born 10 August 1947 in Moscow) is a Russian pianist. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory, and additionally under Dmitri Bashkirov. In the 1970s, Alexeev made his debuts in London, Vienna, Chicago, and New York City, and also won the Leeds Piano Competition in 1975. Nikolay Khozyainov
Nikolay Khozyainov (russian: Николай Юрьевич Хозяинов; born 17 July 1992) is a Russian classical pianist. He is noted for what music critic Anthony Tommasini describes as "stunning virtuosity". Youth and education Nikolay Khozyainov was born in Blagoveshchensk on 17 July 1992. He began to play the piano at the age of five and continued his studies in Moscow at the Central Musical School of the Moscow Conservatory. At the age of seven he made his debut with the Handel Piano Concerto at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Rachel Cheung
Rachel Wai-Ching Cheung (; born September 27, 1991) is a classical pianist from Kowloon, Hong Kong. She has won numerous prizes and awards in Hong Kong and overseas, and performs regularly in Asia, Europe, and North America. Early life and education Cheung comes from a musical family. Her father, a piano teacher, gave her first piano lessons at age four. At age ten, she was admitted to The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) as a junior student studying under Professor Eleanor Wong, Artist-in-Residence and Senior Lecturer in Keyboard. She also attended secondary school at the Maryknoll Convent School. Daniel Hsu
Daniel Hsu (born June 27, 1997) is an American classical pianist. He won the bronze medal, the Beverley Taylor Smith Award for the Best Performance of a New Work, and the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Early life Born in Fremont, California, Hsu began studying piano at 6 with Larisa Kagan. By age 8, he was the youngest winner of the San Francisco Chopin Competition and had made his concerto debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. The following year marked his recital debut at the Steinway Society of the Bay Area. At age 10, he was accepted to the Curtis Institute of Music to study with Gary Graffman and Eleanor Sokoloff. Kenneth Broberg
Kenneth Broberg (born August 2, 1993) is an American classical pianist. In June 2017 he won the silver medal at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In June 2019 Broberg earned the third prize and bronze medal at The XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition. In June 2021 he received the American Pianists Association award. Early life and musical education Broberg was born and raised in Minneapolis. Interested by the upright piano in his family home that was a wedding gift to his parents from his maternal grandparents, he began playing piano at the age of 6. Yekwon Sunwoo ( ko, 선우예권; born February 10, 1989, in Anyang) is a South Korean classical pianist. In 2017, at 28 years old, Sunwoo was the first Korean to win the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He won the Sendai International Music Competition in 2013. Background Sunwoo was born in Anyang, South Korea in 1989. He began studying piano at the age of 8, drawn to the instrument from hearing his two older sisters play. A specialist of the Classic and Romantic repertoires, for more than thirty years she has appeared regularly with professional orchestras around the world, often performing the music of contemporary Polish composers including Lutosławski and Panufnik.
