Hockey, or more specifically, field hockey, was first introduced to the South American Games as a men's and women's tournament at the 2006 Games. History After being introduced in the 2006 South American Games, the field hockey tournament was absent at the 2010 South American Games, but returned in 2014. In the men's competition, Argentina are the most successful national team, having won gold at every edition of the tournament. The Argentine women's team is also the most successful national team in the women's competition, also having won gold at every edition of the tournament. Field Hockey At The 2006 South American Games
The men's and women's field hockey competitions at the 2006 South American Games were the first inclusion of hockey at the South American Games. Both tournaments were held in conjunction with one another between 9 and 19 November 2006 at the CeNARD Hockey Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the men's competition, Argentina won the gold medal by defeating Chile 6–0 in the final. Peru won the bronze medal by defeating Uruguay 3–0 in a penalty shoot-out following a 0–0 draw. In the women's competition, Argentina won the gold medal by defeating Chile 4–0 in the final. Uruguay won the bronze medal by defeating Brazil 4–0. The penalty shootout is a method of determining a winner in sports matches that would have otherwise been drawn or tied. The rules for penalty shootouts vary between sports and even different competitions; however, the usual form is similar to penalty shots in that a single player takes one shot on goal from a specified spot, the only defender being the goalkeeper. If the result is still tied, the shootout usually continues on a "goal-for-goal" basis, with the teams taking shots alternately, and the one that scores a goal unmatched by the other team is declared the winner.
