The field hockey competition at the 1976 Summer Olympics, which was held in the Percival Molson Memorial Stadium at the McGill University, on an artificial surface for the first time. Only a men's competition occurred. New Zealand won the gold medal for the first time by defeating Australia 1–0 in the final. Pakistan won the bronze medal by defeating the Netherlands 3–2. Percival Molson Memorial Stadium (also known in French as ''Stade Percival-Molson''; commonly referred to as Molson Stadium in English or Stade Molson in French) is an outdoor football stadium in Downtown Montreal, on the slopes of Mount Royal, in the borough of Ville-Marie. Named in honour of Percival Molson, and owned by McGill University, it was the home of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League from 1954 to 1967 and again since 1998. The stadium is also home to the McGill Redbirds and Martlets of the RSEQ, the Montreal Royal of the American Ultimate Disc League, the Selwyn House Gryphons high-school football team and the Canadian Corporate Soccer League, the largest amateur corporate league in Canada. David Bell (field Hockey)
David Ian Bell, OAM (born 11 March 1955 in Melbourne) is a retired field hockey player from Australia, who was part of the team that won the silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He attended Aquinas College, Perth. Bell was first selected for Western Australia in 1974 and was a member of the Australia that won a silver medal at 1976 Montreal Olympics. The Australian hockey team boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics. The Australian team finished fourth at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He captained the Australian team that won the 1986 Hockey World Cup. He was the head coach of the Australia women's national field hockey team and the Australian Institute of Sport women's program from 2001 to 2004. Jim Irvine (field Hockey)
James Irvine (born 2 December 1948) is a retired field hockey defender from Australia, who was a member of the national team that won the silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was also a member of the team that finished fourth at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Irvine was born in Sydney, New South Wales. After his career he became a hockey coach. Reginald ("Reg") Plummer (born August 6, 1953 in Sudbury, Ontario) is a field hockey player from Canada. Plummer participated in two consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country, starting in 1976 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There he finished in tenth place with the Men's National Team, just like the team did in Los Angeles, California (1984). Plummer later became the president of the Canadian Field Hockey Association. Terence ("Terry") Arthur Walsh (born 20 November 1953) is a field hockey coach and a former player who played as a striker for Australia. He represented Australia in two Olympic Games, winning a silver medal at the 1976 Games in Montreal. Following his playing career, he became a coach and had successful spells with Australia and Netherlands. He also coached the Indian men's team and guided the team to its first gold medal at the Asian Games after 16 years.
