Fernand Cornez
Fernand Cornez (19 November 1907 in Paris – 7 December 1997 in Saint-Avertin) was a French professional road bicycle racer. In 1933, he won a stage in the Tour de France and in the Giro d'Italia. Saint-Avertin
Saint-Avertin () is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. History In the Gallo-Roman times, a hamlet called Vinciacum was set up near quarries where stones required for the building of Caesarodonum (Tours) were extracted. The village took later the name of Vençay. In 1162, St. Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury, took part to a council in Tours with a Scottish monk named Aberdeen (c. 1120-1180). Becket was murdered in the cathedral of Canterbury upon King Henry II's request in 1170. Aberdeen decided to come back to Touraine and lived as an hermit in the wood of Cangé. The hermit, locally known as Avertin, became famous for his healing skills, especially against headache. The inhabitants of Vençay asked him to be their parish priest, which he accepted. After his death, he was buried in the parish church, which became a place of pilgrimage. Vençay was renamed Saint-Avertin in 1371. Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. The 1933 Tour de France was the 27th edition of the Tour de France, taking place from 27 June to 23 July. It consisted of 23 stages over . This race featured the introduction of the mountains competition, in which cyclists were challenged to climb the mountains the fastest, with points given to the fastest ascenders. This competition was won by Spaniard Vicente Trueba, who reached 9 of the 16 mountain peaks first. The time bonus of two minutes had a large influence on the outcome of the race. Thanks to this bonus, Georges Speicher won the race; without the bonus, Italian Giuseppe Martano would have been the winner. Innovations and changes In the 1932 Tour de France, the bonus system had had a major impact on the results: without these bonuses, the difference between the number one and number two would have been only three seconds, but with these bonuses, it became more than 24 minutes. The 1933 Giro d'Italia was the 21st edition of the Giro d'Italia, organized and sponsored by the newspaper ''La Gazzetta dello Sport''. The race began on 6 May in Milan with a stage that stretched to Turin, finishing back in Milan on 28 May after a stage and a total distance covered of . The race was won by the Alfredo Binda of the Legnano team. Second and third respectively were the Belgian Jef Demuysere and Italian Domenico Piemontesi. This 20th edition covered 3,343 km at an average speed of 30.043 km/h, for a total of 17 stages.
