Fermoy Estate
__NOTOC__ Fermoy Estate is an Australian winery at Wilyabrup, in the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia. Established by John and Beryl Anderson in 1985, it was named in honour of one of John Anderson's ancestors, a Scottish-born businessman who acquired part of Fermoy estate, just north of Cork, Ireland, and set up several industries there. In 1999, the winery was purchased by Dutch/Swiss businessman Hans Hulsbergen. Under his ownership, most of the winery's output was exported to Europe, where his wine business interests were centred. In December 2010, Hulsbergen sold the winery to Perth brothers Aaron and John Young. Fermoy Estate has had a long association with Australian chef and restaurateur Luke Mangan. In May 2004, its Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 was served at a state dinner hosted by Mangan at the Australian Embassy, Copenhagen, for Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, and his then fiancée, Mary Donaldson, in the lead-up to their royal wedding. Wilyabrup, Western Australia
Wilyabrup, also spelt Willyabrup, is a locality in Western Australia's Margaret River wine region, in the local government area of the City of Busselton. The Quinninup Falls are within the locality. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 193. It has the highest concentration of premium wine producers in the region. History The area lies in the traditional lands of the Wadandi people. The name "Wilyabrup" (also spelt "Willyabrup") comes from the local Wilyabrup Brook, which first appeared on planning documents in 1865, and may be derived from "Worlyabaraap", a Noongar word meaning "northern sky". The area was developed in the 1920s as part of the Group Settlement Scheme, with the construction of a hall beginning in 1922 and a school on the site in 1928; the school was destroyed by fire in 1954. Margaret River is the major geographical indication wine region in southwest Western Australia, with 5,017 hectares under vine and 215 wineries as at 2012. Margaret River wine region is made up predominantly of boutique size wine producers; although winery operations range from the smallest crushing 3.5 tonne per year to the largest around 7000 tonne. The climate of Margaret River is more strongly maritime-influenced than any other major Australian region.
