Fenger High School
Fenger Academy High School is a public 4–year high school located in the Roseland neighborhood on the far south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Fenger is a part of the Chicago Public Schools district. The school is named for Danish surgeon Christian Fenger. Fenger opened in 1893. Fenger, along with its former principal Elizabeth Dozier and numerous staff and students was featured prominently in the 2014 CNN documentary series ''Chicagoland''. History When it opened in 1893, Fenger was known as Curtis School. The Chicago Board of Education renamed the school in 1915 in honor of a well-known Danish surgeon, Christian Fenger. Christian Fenger
Christian Fenger (November 3, 1840 – March 7, 1902) was a Danish-born surgeon, pathologist, and medical instructor. Montell Julian Griffin (born June 6, 1970) is an American former professional boxer. He held the WBC light heavyweight title in 1997, and challenged twice for a world title. Early life Montell Griffin was born June 6, 1970 in Chicago. By age 22, Griffin was living in Midway City, California and defeated Frank Vassar of Spokane, Washington in the 1992 U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships. He defeated future heavyweight contender Jeremy Williams at the box-offs, to make the 1992 Olympic team. Amateur career Griffin compiled an amateur record of 36-5. Sammy Esposito
Samuel Esposito (December 15, 1931 – July 9, 2018) was an American professional baseball third baseman and shortstop. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 10 seasons on the Chicago White Sox (1952, 1955–1963) and Kansas City Athletics (1963). In 1959, he helped the White Sox win the American League pennant. He was the head baseball coach at North Carolina State University from 1967 to 1987. Eleanor Dapkus
Eleanor V. Wolf (née Eleanore Dapkus; December 5, 1923 – June 6, 2011) was a center fielder and pitcher who played from through in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Early years Dapkus was born to Lithuanian parents, Frank and Antonina Dapkus, and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She was the tenth and youngest child in her family and the first girl after nine boys. Athletically inclined, she started playing sports with her brothers at a very young age. The only sports she did not participate in were tennis and swimming. Baseball came naturally, but most of the time she played softball, mostly in the streets or in the prairies. She attended Christian Fenger Academy High School in Chicago and played every sport available to girls, but they were all of the playground variety, not varsity competition. Angeline Caruso
Angeline P. Caruso (October 9, 1922 – November 8, 2000) was an American educator, education administrator and former school superintendent. Caruso served as interim superintendent of the Chicago Public Schools district from December 13, 1979, until March 25, 1981. The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is an association that regulates competition of interscholastic sports and some interscholastic activities at the high school level for the state of Illinois.
