Fen McDonald
Fenley John "Fen" McDonald (25 May 1891 – 25 April 1915) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was a member of the First AIF, and was killed in action during the landing at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, in Ottoman Turkey on 25 April 1915. Family The youngest son in the family (of three girls and five boys) of Patrick McDonald (1852-1928), and Margaret McDonald (1853-1928), née Figgins, Fenley John McDonald was born on 25 May 1891 in Nagambie, Victoria. By all accounts, he was a strongly built, quietly spoken, and well-mannered young man. Since the inception of the Victorian Football League in 1897, many of its players have served in the armed services, including the Anglo–Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War (in which Melbourne's Geoff Collins served as a fighter pilot), and the Vietnam War (in which Essendon's Keith Gent, Lindsay McGie, and Ian Payne, and Geelong's Wayne Closter all served). Nagambie is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. The city is on the Goulburn Valley Freeway north of Seymour and in the Shire of Strathbogie. Edwin Patrick "Ted" McDonald (29 September 1875 – 17 March 1919) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family Parents He was born on 29 September 1875 in Nagambie, Victoria. He was the son of Patrick McDonald (1852–1928) and Margaret McDonald (1853–1928), née Figgins. Siblings He was one of five boys and three girls. Two of his brothers also played VFL football: Arch McDonald with Essendon, and Fen McDonald with both Carlton and Melbourne. Vin Gardiner
Vincent Sidley Gardiner (23 October 1885 – 3 October 1972) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Gardiner came from a footballing family, his father John had played for Carlton, and his brother Jack also played for Melbourne and Carlton. Gardiner began his career with Melbourne, but only played two games for the Redlegs in 1905. Gardiner then made his debut for the Carlton Football Club in round 3 of the 1907 season. In his second season, 1908, Gardiner was part of Carlton's premiership winning team. He was also the club's leading goalkicker that season. Gardiner went on to win Carlton's leading goalkicker award six more times and win another premiership, in 1915. He left the Blues at the end of the 1917 season.
