Femtech
Femtech (or female technology) is a term used to define software and services that use technology tailored towards women's health. Femtech includes menstruation care (such as period-tracking apps and menstrual products), as well as fertility and reproductive system healthcare, pregnancy and nursing care, and sexual health. The term "femtech" was coined in 2016 for the menstrual health app Clue (mobile app), Clue. Femtech applications come in several different forms, such as mobile apps and medical devices. Flo (app)
Flo is a health app that provides menstrual cycle and ovulation tracking as well as pregnancy tracking. Flo has over 380 million downloads worldwide and over 70 million monthly active users as of November 2024. In mid-2024, it reached unicorn status, and became Europe’s first femtech unicorn. The company has been the subject of significant scrutiny due to its history of misleading users about its data practices with reports indicating that it had shared users' sensitive health data with third parties without consent. In 2021, Flo settled an FTC complaint on its privacy practices. In 2024, a new class action suit against Flo for violating users' privacy was certified by the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Clue is a menstrual health app developed by the Berlin-based technology company BioWink GmbH. The app has over 15 million users from 180 countries. The startup has raised over $17 million from backers that include Union Square Ventures and Mosaic Ventures. History Clue was co-founded by Ida Tin, Hans Raffauf, Mike LaVigne and Moritz von Buttlar in 2012. BioWink GmbH launched the app in 2013.
