The Federal University of Espírito Santo ( pt, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, ''Ufes'') is a federal university with headquarters in the city of Vitória, Espírito Santo, Vitória, capital of Espírito Santo state, in Brazil. It is the largest and most important university in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. It is a public university, offering free, high-quality higher education by integrating teaching, research and outreach programs in all fields of knowledge. The university was founded in 1954, and today it comprises four campuses. Two are located in the capital city of Vitória (Goiabeiras headquarters and Maruípe), one is in the south (Alegre), and the other is in the north (São Mateus), together covering over 300,000 m2 of floor space in an area of more than 4 million m2. Vitória (, ''Victory''), spelled Victória until the 1940s, is the capital of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. It is located on a small island within a bay where a number of rivers meet the sea. São Mateus is a Municipalities of Brazil, municipality located in the States of Brazil, Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. Its population was estimated at 132,642 in 2020, and its area is 2,346 km². São Mateus is located at 36 meters above sea level. It is the second oldest and seventh most populous municipality in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil.
