Description Fazakerley is in north Liverpool; neighbouring districts include Croxteth, Gillmoss, Aintree and Kirkby. History Fazakerley takes its name from Anglo-Saxon root words—all descriptive words pertaining to land; ''*Fæs-æcer-lēah''. This can be broken down to ''fæs'' (border or fringe), ''æcer'' (field) and ''lēah'', meaning a wood or clearing. In 1321, Fazakerley was described as follows: "the country is extremely flat and treeless, with nothing to recommend it to the passer-by, for it seems to be a district of straight lines, devoid of any beauty". Dixons Fazakerley Academy
Dixons Fazakerley Academy (formerly Fazakerley High School) is a coeducational secondary school located in the Fazakerley area of Liverpool, England. The school is situated on a site which has been the location of various educational establishments since 1937, however the school located into new buildings on the same site in September 2003. Previously a community school administered by Liverpool City Council, in September 2021 Fazakerley High School converted to academy status and was renamed Dixons Fazakerley Academy. Aintree University Hospital
Aintree University Hospital (colloquially known as Fazakerley Hospital) is a National Health Service hospital in Fazakerley, Liverpool. It is managed by the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. History In 1898 Liverpool Corporation acquired land from the Harbreck estate with which to build a hospital. The hospital, initially known as the "City Hospital North, Fazakerley, for Infectious Diseases" opened in 1906. During the First World War, the building was requisitioned by the War Office to create the 1st Western General Hospital, a facility for the Royal Army Medical Corps to treat military casualties. It became the "Fazakerley Infectious Hospital" in 1947 and, after joining the National Health Service in 1948, became the Fazakerley Hospital in 1968. Fazakerley Railway Station
Fazakerley railway station is a railway station in Fazakerley, Liverpool, England. It is situated on the Kirkby branch of the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network. History The Liverpool and Bury Railway (L&BR) was authorised in 1845, but while it was under construction, the L&BR amalgamated with the Manchester and Leeds Railway (M&LR) in 1846, and the M&LR in turn was renamed the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1847. The line opened on 20 November 1848; one of the original stations was ''Simonswood''. This station was renamed twice: it had become ''Aintree'' by 1850, and in March 1860 it took its present name ''Fazakerley'' to avoid confusion with the nearby station on a different line, which had opened in 1849. Steve Rotheram
Steven Philip Rotheram (born 4 November 1961) is a British Labour Party politician who is the Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region. He previously served as the MP for Liverpool Walton from 2010 to 2017. Rotheram was born in Liverpool and left school to become a bricklayer, setting up his own company at the age of 22. He started a Masters in Contemporary Urban Renaissance at Liverpool Hope University. He worked as a Business Manager for the Learning and Skills Council and represented Fazakerley as a councillor on Liverpool City Council. Rotheram was the Member of Parliament for Liverpool Walton from 2010 to 2017. He also served as the Lord Mayor of Liverpool from 2008 to 2009 and a Councillor for Fazakerley from 2002 to 2011. The Walton Centre, formerly known as the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery, is a major neurology hospital located in the suburb of Fazakerley in the city of Liverpool, England. Altcourse (HM Prison)
HM Prison Altcourse is a Category B men's private prison and Young Offender Institution in the Fazakerley area of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. The prison is operated by G4S. History Altcourse became the first prison to be procured under a Private Finance Initiative contract when the contract was signed in December 1995. It was built by Tarmac Construction and opened in December 1997. While early reports about the management of the prison were favourable, the financing of the project drew criticism after it emerged that former owner GSL had managed to make a £10 million windfall from the contracts. In 2005 it was reported that Altcourse was the most overcrowded prison in England with 1,324 inmates. Cook da Books (also known as Cook the Books, Big in France and Da Books) were a British new wave band from Liverpool, England, formed in 1980. The band were signed to indie labels throughout their career, and much of their music was politically charged, though they also contributed music to popular film soundtracks. They released two albums and eleven singles before splitting up in 1988.
