Fay Ray (band)
Fay Ray were a Welsh new wave band who were active from 1979 to 1982. The band formed in Bangor in north-west Wales in 1979 and despite rumours to the contrary were not named after the dog of photographer William Wegman. The band was signed by producer Nigel Gray to his Surrey Sounds label, and they released a single, "Family Affairs", in 1980. The single "Family Affairs" was one of three records of the week selected by Lynden Barber in his "Essential Buys" column in ''Melody Maker''; the other two being "Reward" by the Teardrop Explodes and "I'm in Love with a German Film Star" by the Passions. However, as a small independent label, Surrey Sound did not have the distribution network in place to capitalise on this success; it was not in the shops to buy. ''Der Musikladen'' (german: The Music Shop) was a West German music television programme that ran from 13 December 1972 to 29 November 1984. The show continued the 1960s ''Beat-Club'' under a new name, and in turn was replaced by ''Extratour''. History Around 90 episodes were aired, plus 59 as ''Musikladen extra'' with most being made in the period between 1974 and 1979. All episodes were produced by Radio Bremen and directed by Michael Leckebusch. A normal episode of ''Musikladen'' usually featured several live performances by guest musicians, and ran around 45 minutes. Some episodes were longer, and a few were shorter. The Community Programme Unit was established by the BBC to help members of the public create programmes to be broadcast nationally. The unit was established in 1972 by producers such as Rowan Ayers having won the approval of the Director of Programmes David Attenborough for a series of ten programmes called '' Open Door'' for BBC 2. The first programme was broadcast on 2 April 1973. ''Open Door'' evolved into '' Open Space'' which by the end of the 1980s was receiving up to twenty proposals from the public for programmes every week.
