Fares Badawi
Fares Badawi ( ar, فارس بدوي, ; born 25 July 1996) is a Palestinian judoka who competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Early and personal life Badawi was born in Damascus, Syria, to Ndal and Amera Badawi, children of Palestinian refugees from Tarshiha who were expelled in 1948. He grew up in the Yarmouk refugee camp with his parents and three siblings (Fadi, Hamza and Obada). At the age of 9, following his oldest brother, he started practising judo at the Arab Palestinian Club in Yarmouk, coached by Mohamed Al-Nimr. He also claims to have been inspired by Korean Olympic medallist An Chang-rim. In 2015, Badawi and his family fled the Syrian civil war for Germany, settling in Braunschweig, where he lives . Besides his native Arabic, he speaks German and English. he is pursuing a master's degree in civil engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Badawi is a practicing Muslim. An Chang-rim (; born 2 March 1994) is a South Korean retired judoka. An is currently the world champion in the lightweight division. He began his rise as one of judo's top lightweights by becoming junior World Champion. It was followed by a two-year podium streak, including wins at the prestigious Grand Slam Abu Dhabi and Tokyo. He is known for his physical, aggressive style of fighting, and is a versatile stylist of seoi nage. An won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships. South Korea's premier lightweight, he represented Korea at the 2016 Olympics. He was also seeded first at the Olympics. He is currently ranked fourth in the world. The 2022 World Judo Championships was held at the Humo Ice Dome in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 6 to 13 October 2022, concluding with the mixed team event on its final day. Scheduling The competition was originally scheduled to take place from 7 to 14 August 2022.
